Job description

I. Job Summary:

This position is responsible for overseeing the Company’s federal, state, and local income and transaction tax reporting and the related tax accounting processes. The Manager, Tax manages the preparation, review, and filing of all tax provisions and compliance requirements and ensures adherence to applicable laws and regulations.

This role manages the company’s relationship with various external tax advisors and preparers with respect to tax return preparation and review of income and transaction tax provisions and compliance. The Manager is responsible for accurate  and complete tax-related financial reporting. The Manager is responsible to gather tax related data, perform technical analyses, and resolve tax related issues, prepare tax-related journal entries, account reconciliations, and prepare tax disclosures. This role oversee the income tax depreciation module in Oracle, including methodologies, calculations, and forecasting.

The Manager, Tax supports financial reporting requirements including 10-Q and 10-K tax disclosures, managing audit activity, and maintaining documentation of tax processes, procedures, and internal controls in compliance with SOX 404 requirements.

II. Key Responsibilities:

• Oversee and manage the gathering of income tax-related records and documentation for submission to external tax advisors; coordinate responses and resolve issues
• Manage the preparation and review of quarterly and annual income tax provisions and related disclosures
• Establish and maintain processes to support tax footnotes and reporting
• Monitor business transactions to identify tax implications and communicate impacts
• Oversee income tax depreciation records and forecasting
• Stay current on tax law changes and provide guidance to management
• Lead transaction tax audit activity
• Prepare and maintain exemption certificate and certificate repository
• Prepare Form 990 for Foundation 
• Identify and implement process improvements, apply AI and other solutions to drive efficiencies
• Demonstrates knowledge of telecommunications taxes, including appropriate use of exemption certificates based on customer type
• Prepare, and review all monthly, quarterly, and annual state and local pass-through tax filings, ensuring timely compliance with jurisdictional requirements and accurate reporting
• Manage property tax obligations by providing necessary data to third-party preparers, reviewing filings, and ensuring all property tax payments are completed timely and accurately
• Unclaimed Property preparation and filings 
• Review tax reconciliations and journal entries
• Oversee extension and estimated tax payments including telecom regulatory payments
• Manage transaction tax filings and correspondence
• Support company strategic initiatives and accounting projects
• Improve reporting processes
• Ensure internal control compliance

III. Qualification Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
• 5+ years of relevant tax experience
• CPA required
• Strong analytical skills
• Excellent Excel modeling skills
• Must be an effective communicator, able to craft and deliver presentations, reports and updates to management
• Proactive, self-starter who can manage multiple priorities
• Demonstrated strong attention to detail

IV. Knowledge:

• Accounting systems (Oracle) and Microsoft Office
• Tax compliance and provision systems
• Research of tax regulations 
• Advanced Intermediate excel proficiency (i.e. modeling, complex formulas, report development, pivot tables, XLOOKUP/XLOOPUP, IF statements, etc.)

Location: Primarily Remote within Shentel’s operating footprint. Shentel has a distributed workforce located in the Shenandoah Valley, Northern and Central Virginia areas, as well as portions of Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky.
