What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Passive Fire Protection Specialist, and why are they important?

A successful Remote Passive Fire Protection Specialist typically requires a background in fire safety engineering, building codes, and relevant certifications such as CFPA or IFC accreditation. Familiarity with digital inspection tools, fire modeling software, and compliance management systems is also important for remote assessment and reporting. Strong communication, attention to detail, and problem-solving abilities help in interpreting regulations and advising clients effectively from a distance. These skills ensure that buildings remain compliant and occupants are safe, even when assessments and consultations are conducted remotely.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in remote passive fire protection roles, and how can they be addressed?

One common challenge in remote passive fire protection roles is ensuring effective communication and coordination with on-site teams, especially when overseeing compliance or conducting virtual inspections. To address this, professionals often rely on detailed documentation, regular video conferences, and clear protocols for sharing photographs and reports. Staying updated on local regulations and standards is also crucial, as remote roles may cover multiple regions. Building strong relationships with facility managers and local contractors can help bridge any gaps and ensure fire safety measures are properly implemented.

What is a Remote Passive Fire Protection specialist?

A Remote Passive Fire Protection specialist is a professional who assesses, designs, and recommends fire safety solutions that prevent the spread of fire and smoke within buildings, often working remotely. Their primary focus is on passive fire protection measures such as fire-resistant walls, doors, floors, and fire-stopping materials, rather than active suppression systems like sprinklers. By performing evaluations, audits, and compliance checks from a remote location, they help ensure that buildings meet local fire safety regulations and standards. Their work is essential for minimizing fire risks and protecting lives and property in various construction and industrial settings.

Responsibilities
Applications Engineer - Passive Fire Protection (PFP)
Location: Field-based, US (with regular travel)
Morgan Advanced Materials designs and makes specialist materials that quietly keep some pretty critical things safe, efficient, and compliant. One of those is Passive Fire Protection - the systems that stop fire spreading when it really matters.
We're now looking for an Applications Engineer to help get our PFP systems specified early, installed correctly, and chosen for the right reasons. This role sits right at the intersection of technical know-how, commercial thinking, and real-world site experience.
The Role
You'll be out in the field, not stuck behind a desk. One day you might be training installers or walking a job site. The next, you'll be working with engineers or architects to influence specifications before products are locked in.
Your focus is simple: grow demand for our PFP systems (including FireMaster FastWrap XLS), reduce reliance on distributor-led selling, and make sure projects convert from spec to order to installation.
Key Responsibilities
You'll spend your time:
  • Driving specification and demand for Passive Fire Protection systems
  • Building strong relationships with installers, contractors, engineers, architects, and inspectors
  • Running installer, contractor, and union training sessions (and making them worth attending)
  • Identifying and tracking project-based opportunities from early design through install
  • Providing technical guidance, system recommendations, and submittals
  • Influencing specifications early - before price becomes the only conversation
  • Working closely with distributors to support project execution and availability
  • Using value-based selling to highlight performance, compliance, and labor efficiency
  • Keeping CRM updated with pipeline activity, forecasts, and market insight
  • Feeding back competitor activity, customer needs, and product gaps to internal teams

Qualifications
  • About You / What You'll Bring
    You'll likely bring:
    • Experience in technical sales, field applications, or commercial roles within construction, insulation, fire protection, or industrial markets
    • Solid knowledge of Passive Fire Protection systems (or closely related products)
    • Confidence working with installers, contractors, engineers, and specifiers
    • The ability to explain technical detail clearly - without drowning people in it
    • A practical, organised approach and comfort managing your own territory
    • Willingness to travel regularly and spend time on-site
    • Strong communication skills and a relationship-first mindset
    • Comfort working cross-functionally with Sales, Engineering, Marketing, and Operations
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and CRM systems
    Nice to Have
    • Familiarity with UL / Intertek listings and compliance requirements
    • Experience influencing specifications early in the project lifecycle
    • A degree in Engineering, Construction, Sales, Marketing, or a related field
    What You'll Get
You'll join a business that values practical expertise, straight talking, and doing things properly. You'll have the autonomy to run your territory, support from experienced internal teams, and the chance to make a visible impact on how our PFP systems are specified and installed.
Morgan Advanced Materials is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We're committed to building an inclusive workplace and welcome applications from all backgrounds.

Sales Effectiveness Competencies: How will the role-holder behave in their role?

Sales Planning
• Develops territory plans aligned with PFP growth strategy
• Identifies high-value project opportunities and target accounts
• Aligns activities with broader commercial and operational objectives
• Defines clear next steps and follow-ups with customers

• Builds pipeline of project-based opportunities
