Job description

Salary: $115,000 - $175,000 per year, depending on experience and level

Position Description

The Power Controls Engineer will work with the SCADA Engineering team and project managers. Responsible for integrating real-time Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) and computer systems at electric power generation plants, including utility-scale solar power, wind power, and battery storage. Typical devices include RTUs, PLCs, SCADA systems, Plant Control Systems, electric power meters, and meteorological (MET) data loggers.


This position may be filled as a level 1, 2, 3, Senior, or Lead, depending upon the knowledge, skills, and experience of the selected candidate. The posted salary range reflects the reasonably anticipated range that might apply to offers made across those levels.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Oversee the full lifecycle of automation projects from conception to completion.
  • Develop and grow new technical service areas related to SEL RTACs.
  • Document and implement logic and control schemes for remote and local operation of power system equipment
  • Develop programs for the implementation of Remedial Action Schemes, PV Solar, Battery Energy Storage Systems, Microgrid, Renewable Curtailment, Volt/Var Control, Load Shedding, Anti-Islanding, and other custom logic.
  • Develop and implement innovative solutions to automate complex processes.
  • Establish and maintain best practices and guidelines for automation and control systems.
  • Provide leadership and direction to engineering teams, enhancing skill development.
  • Lead design and implementation of complex SCADA systems.
  • Coordinate large project teams and manage project timelines and budgets.
  • Conduct high-level troubleshooting and system diagnostics.
  • Develop and standardize SCADA protocols and best practices.
  • Collaborate with other departments for system integration and enhancements.


Qualifications & Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in a related field and at least five years of experience with SCADA systems or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Expertise in SEL AcSELerator for RTAC, CODESYS, and Python.
  • 5+ years relevant experience in working with SEL RTAC 33XX and 35XX SCADA systems utilizing IEC 61131 structured text programming.
  • 5+ years of experience in Relaying, Planning, Substation, Information Technology, or Distribution design, construction, or operations preferred.
  • Profound understanding of network architecture and cybersecurity.
  • Strong leadership and team coordination skills.
  • Exceptional problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Advanced technical writing and documentation abilities.
  • Excellent stakeholder management.


Physical, Mental & Emotional Requirements

Employee may be required to sit for long periods of time using a keyboard and monitor display, travel to other locations, lift up to 20lbs, and push/pull up to 50lbs. Must be able to organize and prioritize work in accordance with deadlines, adapt behavior and work methods in response to changing conditions or challenges. Employee will be involved with sustained activity required for analysis, reasoning, and problem solving. Must be able to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships, recognize emotionally charged issues and respond appropriately, act with professionalism, and work both independently and collaboratively. Must be able to proactively encourage a work environment that encourages innovation and creative solutions and be able to develop effective working relationships with all levels of the company and outside partners.

Work Environment

The employee will primarily work in a climate-controlled office with occasional fluctuations in temperature. The employee will work at an assigned desk under artificial lighting. The employee may occasionally attend meetings and/or training outside of their assigned workstation. They may occasionally perform work remotely in the environment of their choosing. Employee may be required to perform some travel.
