What is a remote nonprofit technology?

A Remote Nonprofit Technology job involves using technology skills to support the mission and operations of nonprofit organizations, all while working from a remote location. These roles can include IT support, website management, database administration, digital fundraising, or managing tech projects tailored to nonprofit needs. Individuals in these positions help nonprofits adopt and utilize technology to increase efficiency, improve outreach, and achieve their goals. The remote aspect allows professionals to work from anywhere, providing flexibility and access to a broader talent pool.

How does a remote nonprofit technology professional typically collaborate with on-site staff and stakeholders?

As a Remote Nonprofit Technology professional, you will regularly coordinate with on-site staff and stakeholders through virtual meetings, collaborative platforms, and shared documentation tools. Effective communication is crucial, as you'll often translate technical needs into actionable solutions while ensuring alignment with the organization's mission. Regular check-ins, clear project management practices, and proactive engagement help bridge the distance and maintain strong working relationships. This remote setup often requires flexibility and strong self-management skills to stay responsive and integrated with the broader team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in remote nonprofit technology roles, and why are they important?

To excel in Remote Nonprofit Technology roles, you need a solid grasp of IT fundamentals, nonprofit operations, and experience with digital platforms commonly used in the sector, often supported by a relevant degree or certifications. Familiarity with CRM systems like Salesforce, donor management platforms, cloud collaboration tools, and data security best practices is highly valued. Strong communication, problem-solving abilities, and a mission-driven mindset are crucial soft skills for success in remote and cross-functional teams. These competencies ensure nonprofits can leverage technology to maximize impact, streamline operations, and effectively serve their communities from a distance.

Job description

About JerseySTEM
All JerseySTEM roles are pro-bono (unpaid) positions.
Areas of Focus - Azure Hosting & Administration, AWS Infrastructure, Migration, Cloud Governance
  • AWS Infrastructure Operations: Design, maintain, and support secure AWS environments across compute, storage, networking, account structure, and operational practices that complement JerseySTEM's Azure-hosted services.
  • Azure Hosting & Administration: Administer Azure-hosted applications, data services, and supporting infrastructure, including tenant configuration, subscriptions, resource groups, access controls, monitoring, and core service settings.
  • Infrastructure as Code: Implement and maintain AWS infrastructure using repeatable, version-controlled practices with tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation to improve consistency, reliability, and speed of deployment.
  • Hosting Migration & Platform Integration: Support the migration from legacy hosting environments onto hyper scalers, coordinating application hosting, data warehouse hosting, identity integration, networking, and operational handoff.
  • Identity & Access Operations: Oversee practical identity and access controls across Azure and AWS, including role design, permission management, account lifecycle processes, and secure access standards.
  • Reliability & Service Continuity: Establish backup, monitoring, logging, and recovery practices across cloud services to support service continuity and operational resilience.
  • Cost & Resource Optimization: Monitor Azure subscriptions, licensing, hosted services, and AWS usage to identify waste, improve efficiency, and recommend right-sized solutions aligned to a nonprofit budget.
  • Governance & Standards: Define lightweight cloud standards, documentation, and operational guardrails that enable volunteer contributors to manage AWS and Azure responsibly and consistently.

Overview
Membership is a minimum six-month commitment of approximately 6-8 flexible hours per week and includes a $100 refundable deposit, returned after six months of active membership. K-12 educators, retirees, veterans, interns, and students are exempt from the deposit.
JerseySTEM is a mission-driven professional network of pro-bono contributors dedicated to improving access to STEM education and career pathways for underserved middle school girls in New Jersey.
Members contribute their professional skills and leverage their networks in service of the organization's gender-equity agenda.
Role Overview
Reporting to the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) or designated technology leader, the Cloud Infrastructure Lead is a high-impact role for an experienced professional who can translate organizational needs into a secure, stable, and well-governed cloud operating model. The role focuses on strengthening JerseySTEM's Azure hosting, administration, data services, and tenant operations while maintaining AWS as a complementary infrastructure platform for applications, internal systems, and future migration needs.
This role blends hands-on implementation with tactical oversight across Azure administration, AWS infrastructure, migration planning, automation, integrations, and lightweight governance suited to a remote, nonprofit environment.
Qualifications
Qualifications & Requirements
  • 8+ years of proven experience in cloud infrastructure, Azure administration, AWS operations, platform engineering, or systems engineering roles.
  • Ability to work independently as a "doer", taking ownership of Azure and AWS initiatives from conception through implementation and ongoing support.
  • Strong understanding of Azure hosting, tenant configuration, subscription management, user lifecycle management, and AWS infrastructure concepts including compute, storage, networking, IAM, backup, and recovery.
  • Hands-on experience with infrastructure as code and automation tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, Ansible, or equivalent.
  • Experience supporting integrations, identity management, hosting migration, and configuration governance across Azure, AWS, and related cloud services.
  • Establish and maintain monitoring, alerting, logging, operational documentation, and support practices to ensure reliable service delivery.
  • Partner with JerseySTEM TECH and non-technical stakeholders to prioritize platform and infrastructure improvements aligned with organizational needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to optimize cloud subscriptions, licensing, hosted services, and infrastructure usage while recommending cost-effective solutions for a nonprofit organization.
  • Excellent communication skills to explain technical decisions, risks, and tradeoffs to both technical and leadership audiences.
  • Comfortable working in a fully remote, member-driven organization.

Commitment: Ability to dedicate approximately one working day (6-8 hours) per week to have a tangible impact.
  • Relevant certifications are a plus but not required (e.g., AWS Solutions Architect, AWS SysOps Administrator, Azure Administrator, Google Professional Cloud Architect, Terraform Associate).
