This Opportunity
WSP is currently initiating a search for a Transmission Planner for our Denver, CO office. Candidates for our offices in Fort Worth, TX, Orlando, FL, Portland, OR, Overland Park, KS, Minneapolis, MN and Richmond, VA will also be considered. Be involved in projects with our Electrical Studies, SCADA, and Protection (ESSP) team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our clients' objectives and solves their challenges.
This individual will be responsible for interfacing with other engineers in the preparation of computer-based models and performing power system studies on utility transmission systems and industrial/commercial electrical power systems including: feasibility studies, system impact studies, reactive compensation studies, protective relay settings, critical clearing time, stability (transient & dynamic), long/short range planning studies, short circuit, load flow, motor starting, power factor correction, and other related studies.
The level of this engineer requires an individual who has experience producing transmission planning models and studies, had good technical writing capabilties, and can engage with clients to discuss transmission projects. This person must be able to take direction from a senior engineering manager or project lead, organize activities across multiple projects in parallel, and communicate with their peers proactively to successfully execute engineering tasks.
Your Impact
  • Execute transmission planning studies such as network expansion, interconnection, system impact, reactive, NERC compliance, and other relevant studies.
  • Support business development and support proposals.
  • Execute project tasks based on the communicated scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Apply high-level electrical engineering techniques and processes to identify improvements for various infrastructure project phases involving more complex infrastructure engineering work including concept development, preliminary design, final design, procurement, construction, and operation.
  • Mentor junior engineers as-needed to grow study teams.
  • Ensure technical reports and presentations explain research, findings, and recommendations to prevent, control, restore, or address electrical, design, and/or construction issues or opportunities.
  • Support a client base for providing high level electrical engineering services including identifying additional business development opportunities.
  • Remain current in latest electrical engineering techniques and practices.
  • Collaborate with professionals from a variety of disciplines, other engineers, planners, and infrastructure authorities on Federal, State, regional, and locally funded improvement and development projects, as well as proposal and business development opportunities.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

Who You Are
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent experience).
  • 5 to 7 years of relevant post education experience as an electrical engineer providing design deliverables for capital projects in power generation, transmission, and distribution at a utility, industrial, or commercial scale.
  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Experience with PSSE, PSLF, and/or PSCAD, plus other power system software packages
  • Experience developing and tuning models for new and existing transmission resources
  • Ability to work successfully in a customer-focused, project-oriented environment
  • Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing intricate ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant engineering and electrical construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
  • Strong self-leadership and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to effectively, persuasively, and tactfully interact with clients, regulators, project managers, and employees at all levels of the organization.
  • Works independently to provide guidance and leadership to mid-level to senior level team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
  • Must reside and work within the United States.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in Engineering.
  • Essential Professional Licensure/Certification.
  • Experience performing system impact studies in multiple US markets & networks
  • Expert in NERC compliance with extensive study experience
  • PSCAD experience including complex controls interactions, inverter and rotating generation, detailed FACTS modeling, grid-forming controls knowledge, and subsynchronous studies.
  • Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training desired.

Compensation:
Expected Salary (all locations): $90,600yr - $160,200yr
