How much do remote mechanical engineering jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 17, 2026, the average yearly pay for remote mechanical engineering in Wisconsin is $103,840.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $82,300.00 and $127,700.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote mechanical engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Remote Mechanical Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical design, analysis, and problem-solving, typically backed by a relevant engineering degree and, in some cases, a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), simulation tools (like ANSYS), and collaborative project management systems is crucial. Strong communication, self-motivation, and time management skills help remote engineers effectively coordinate with distributed teams and manage independent tasks. These abilities are vital for delivering high-quality engineering solutions, meeting deadlines, and maintaining productivity in a remote work environment.

What is remote mechanical engineering?

Remote mechanical engineering involves performing mechanical engineering tasks such as designing, analyzing, and testing mechanical systems from a location outside of a traditional office or job site. Remote mechanical engineers use computer-aided design (CAD) software, simulation tools, and collaboration platforms to communicate with teams and manage projects online. This arrangement allows for flexibility and can enable engineers to work with companies and clients around the world. Remote work in this field is increasingly popular due to advancements in technology and the ability to securely share and analyze complex data online.

How do remote mechanical engineers typically collaborate with on-site teams and manage hands-on project components?

Remote mechanical engineers often rely on a mix of digital collaboration tools, such as CAD software, video conferencing, and project management platforms, to stay connected with on-site teams. While most design and analysis tasks can be completed remotely, they may coordinate closely with local engineers or technicians for tasks that require physical presence, such as prototyping or testing. Clear communication and regular status updates are essential to ensure project goals are met and any issues are addressed promptly. Building strong relationships with on-site team members helps bridge gaps and facilitates smooth project execution.

Can a remote mechanical engineer work remotely?

Yes, many mechanical engineering roles can be performed remotely, especially those focused on design, analysis, and simulation using CAD software and other digital tools. However, some tasks requiring on-site testing, manufacturing, or equipment access may necessitate in-person presence or hybrid arrangements.

What is the difference between Remote Mechanical Engineering vs Remote Mechanical Design Engineer?

Job description

Remote - USA Only (48 Contiguous States) Travel: ~10% annually
We're looking for a Finite Element Analysis (FEA) Analyst to support advanced engineering simulations and mechanical design work for complex machinery, heavy equipment, and high-capacity structures. Your work directly impacts product performance, safety, and innovation across our customers' engineering programs.
You'll analyze and improve the structural mechanics of mechanical systems, lead design efforts, and contribute to cutting-edge engineering initiatives across multiple industries.
This is a remote role supporting customers nationwide, with occasional travel to fabrication shops, test sites, or field locations.
Requirements
What You'll Do
  • Perform FEA simulations (linear, nonlinear, contact, buckling, fatigue, large-deflection) using ANSYS or similar tools
  • Analyze and validate crane structures, lifting beams, rigging components, and heavy mechanical systems
  • Develop 3D models, detailed drawings, and engineering documentation in SolidWorks, Inventor, or Creo
  • Conduct hand calculations to verify FEA results and support design decisions
  • Lead mechanical design from concept through prototype, testing, and field implementation
  • Support customers with rapid engineering assessments and problem-solving
  • Generate engineering reports, test plans, and work packs for fabrication and field execution
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, fabricators, and field technicians
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to design reviews and process improvements

Must-Have Qualifications
  • BSME 10+ years or MSME with 5+ years of hands-on, demonstrated FEA experience with the analysis of major components of heavy equipment that could be mobile or stationary equipment
  • 10+ years of mechanical engineering experience in cranes, lifting systems, or heavy mechanical equipment
  • Advanced FEA experience (ANSYS strongly preferred)
  • Strong background in structural mechanics, weldments, heavy steel structures, and load-bearing systems
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks, Inventor, or Pro/E/Creo
  • Demonstrated ability to produce well-documented calculations, FEA reports, and design packages
  • U.S. Citizen or Green Card holder
  • Ability to travel up to ~10%

Preferred Experience
  • Designing cranes, hoists, lifting beams, gantries, or high-capacity structures
  • Experience with hydraulic or mechanical powertrain systems
  • Familiarity with offshore, industrial, or construction lifting environments
  • Knowledge of ASME B30, API, DNV, ABS or similar standards
  • Hands-on exposure to fabrication, testing, or field commissioning

Work Environment
  • Fully remote (48 contiguous USA only)
  • Occasional travel to customer sites, fabrication shops, or test facilities
  • Work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams and field personnel

Benefits
We value our team's well-being and offer a robust benefits package to support your professional and personal growth:
  • Competitive Compensation: An attractive base salary, commensurate with experience.
  • Generous Time Off: Paid holidays, PTO, and flexible time off to recharge and maintain work-life balance.
  • Retirement Savings: 401(k) plan to secure your future.
  • Health and Wellness: Comprehensive medical, dental, vision, and life insurance coverage.
  • Disability Protection: Short-term and long-term disability plans for peace of mind.
