What is a Remote CADWorx designer?

A Remote CADWorx designer is a professional who uses the CADWorx software suite to create detailed 2D and 3D models for piping, equipment, and plant design projects, while working from a remote location rather than on-site. Their responsibilities often include collaborating with engineering teams, producing accurate design drawings, and ensuring that all designs comply with industry standards and project specifications. Remote CADWorx designers use digital communication and file-sharing tools to coordinate with clients and colleagues, making it possible to efficiently contribute to projects from anywhere.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote CADWorx designer?

To thrive as a Remote CADWorx Designer, you need a solid background in piping design, 3D modeling, and engineering principles, typically supported by relevant technical education or experience in the oil, gas, or industrial sectors. Expertise in CADWorx software, AutoCAD, and familiarity with industry codes and standards are essential, along with possible certification in CADWorx. Strong attention to detail, effective communication, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for delivering high-quality work independently and collaborating remotely. These abilities ensure accurate, efficient project delivery and seamless teamwork across distributed engineering teams.

What are some common challenges faced by Remote CADWorx professionals, and how can they be managed effectively?

Remote Cadworx professionals often encounter challenges related to communication and project coordination, especially when collaborating with teams across different locations. Maintaining clear and frequent communication through video calls, instant messaging, and project management tools is essential to ensure design intent and project requirements are understood. Additionally, managing large CAD files and ensuring version control can be difficult, so utilizing cloud-based platforms and proper file naming conventions helps streamline workflows. Staying proactive about seeking feedback and clarifying project details can also lead to smoother project execution and higher-quality deliverables.

This position will be located in Green Bay, WI and will require the ability to work in the office on a hybrid schedule, with remote flexibility on other days. The ideal candidate will have experience using CAD software to support utility or gas distribution design projects. While familiarity with CADWorx is a plus, this specific role will primarily support a client that uses an internal design program called DDS. Candidates should have strong CAD experience and be comfortable learning client-specific design platforms.

We are open to a range of experience levels. Ideally, this person will bring 3–5+ years of gas distribution, utility design, or related drafting/design experience, but entry-level candidates with strong CAD skills and an interest in gas distribution design will also be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare design drawings and construction-related documents for natural gas distribution projects.
  • Interpret sketches, redlines, specification outlines, utility records, field notes, and client standards to develop accurate design deliverables.
  • Create design drawings using CAD software and client-specific design platforms, including the client's internal DDS system.
  • Support gas main replacement, new service installations, relocations, upgrades, and other distribution-related projects.
  • Perform pre-design and pre-construction site visits to verify existing conditions, gather field information, and support constructability.
  • Review site proposals, surveys, base maps, utility records, and project data to support design development.
  • Develop detailed design drawings from general project information, sketches, and field documentation.
  • Ensure designs adhere to applicable codes, standards, client requirements, project-specific procedures, and safety expectations.
  • Coordinate with project managers, engineers, utility representatives, construction teams, and internal design staff.
  • Assist with material takeoffs, permitting support, construction estimates, and project documentation as needed.
  • Maintain and manage CAD files, templates, design models, and project records.
  • Employee may be required to perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Experience in gas distribution, utility design, civil design, or related drafting/design work preferred.
  • Strong experience using Computer-Aided Design software, such as AutoCAD, AutoCAD Map 3D, AutoCAD Civil 3D, or similar design tools.
  • Familiarity with CADWorx is a plus, but not required for this specific role.
  • Experience with client-specific utility design platforms or the ability to quickly learn new design software.
  • Ability to perform field visits, gather site information, and translate field conditions into accurate design documents.
  • Understanding of utility design standards, construction drawings, and project documentation.
  • Ability to work on a hybrid schedule in Green Bay, WI.

Preferred Experience

  • 3–5+ years of experience in gas distribution, utility design, or related drafting/design work preferred.
  • Entry-level candidates with strong CAD skills and an interest in utility or gas distribution design will also be considered.
  • Experience supporting natural gas utility clients.
  • Knowledge of gas distribution systems, mains, services, valves, tie-ins, utility records, and construction documentation.
  • Experience performing pre-design site walks, field verification, and pre-construction coordination.
  • Familiarity with Wisconsin utility work or Midwest gas distribution projects is a plus.

**This position will be remote. Candidate must be in the Wisconsin market. Ideal areas include Green Bay, Wausau, Milwaukee, and Madison for client-facing travel.**
