What is a temporary mechanical engineer?

Temporary mechanical engineers are professionals hired for a specific period or project to design, develop, and test mechanical systems or components. They possess the same skills and qualifications as permanent mechanical engineers but work on a contract or fixed-term basis. Companies often hire temporary mechanical engineers to address short-term needs, such as covering staff shortages, meeting project deadlines, or handling increased workloads. Their roles can include drafting technical drawings, conducting simulations, and troubleshooting machinery, depending on the project's requirements.

What does a temporary mechanical engineer do?

In a temporary mechanical engineering role, you will often be assigned to support ongoing projects or to help meet short-term increases in workload. Typical responsibilities include assisting with design modifications, creating or revising CAD drawings, conducting tests or analysis, and supporting documentation efforts. You'll likely collaborate closely with permanent engineers, project managers, and manufacturing teams to ensure project milestones are met on time. Temporary positions can provide exposure to a variety of projects and may serve as a valuable stepping stone to full-time roles within the organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a temporary mechanical engineer?

To succeed as a Temporary Mechanical Engineer, you typically need a degree in mechanical engineering, strong analytical skills, and experience with design and manufacturing processes. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), project management tools, and knowledge of industry standards are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, adaptability, and effective communication help you integrate quickly into new teams and projects. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering high-quality engineering solutions within tight deadlines and dynamic work environments.

What is the difference between Temporary Mechanical Engineering vs Mechanical Engineering?

AspectTemporary Mechanical EngineeringMechanical Engineering
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering; certifications like EIT or PE are optional but beneficialRequires a bachelor's degree; PE license enhances career prospects
Work EnvironmentOften project-based, short-term assignments, on-site or office settingsFull-time, long-term employment in manufacturing, design, or R&D facilities
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by staffing agencies, consulting firms, and companies needing temporary supportEmployed directly by companies in industries like automotive, aerospace, or energy

Temporary Mechanical Engineering roles are short-term, project-based positions ideal for gaining experience or covering staffing gaps. Full-time Mechanical Engineering positions offer stability and ongoing responsibilities within a company's core operations. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds but differ mainly in duration and employment structure.

Can I work remotely as a temporary mechanical engineer?

Temporary mechanical engineers typically work on-site to collaborate with teams and oversee equipment or projects, but some roles may offer remote or hybrid options depending on the employer and project requirements. Remote work is more common in design, analysis, or consulting tasks that do not require physical presence. Certification in CAD software and strong communication skills can facilitate remote work opportunities in this field.

Job description

Job Title: Mechanical EngineerJob Description

This role offers an opportunity for a hands-on Mechanical Engineer to contribute to mechanical design and problem-solving in a close-knit, family-oriented manufacturing environment. You will apply your SolidWorks and mechanical engineering knowledge on the production floor, collaborating directly with workers to diagnose issues, improve tools and fixtures, and support continuous improvement across multiple departments.

Responsibilities
  • Use SolidWorks and mechanical engineering principles to support mechanical design and problem-solving activities.
  • Collaborate closely with production floor workers to understand issues, gather feedback, and implement practical engineering solutions.
  • Visit areas such as the wax room, straightening department, and other production zones to observe processes and identify mechanical or tooling problems.
  • Inspect tools and fixtures to determine root causes of issues and recommend or implement corrective actions.
  • Use hand tools and equipment to assist in troubleshooting and improving mechanical components and fixtures.
  • Support grinding fixture setup and learning processes in the straightening department and related areas.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings to ensure designs and tooling meet specifications.
  • Participate actively in continuous improvement efforts by suggesting design enhancements and process optimizations.
  • Communicate clearly with team members across engineering and production to ensure alignment on design changes and process updates.
Essential Skills
  • Mechanical engineering background with experience or training in SolidWorks.
  • Ability to perform mechanical design tasks and apply engineering principles in a manufacturing environment.
  • Comfort working on the production floor and communicating directly with workers at all levels.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Willingness to perform hands-on work using hand tools and interacting with mechanical fixtures and equipment.
  • Interest in working in a family-owned, close-knit environment rather than a large corporate setting.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or Associate degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Internship experience in mechanical engineering or manufacturing (preferred but not required).
  • Experience or familiarity with castings and foundry-related processes.
  • Experience working with mechanical fixtures, grinding fixtures, or straightening operations.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to identifying and resolving mechanical issues.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for collaborating with production and engineering teams.
Work Environment

You will work in a family-owned manufacturing and foundry environment that emphasizes a close-knit, supportive culture. The atmosphere is highly collaborative, with a strong sense of community and teamwork. The organization offers profit sharing for every employee and regularly hosts events such as pizza parties and company picnics that include employees and their families, reflecting a strong commitment to work-life balance and community. The role is hands-on and floor-focused, requiring frequent presence in production areas such as the wax room and straightening department, where you will work around tools, fixtures, castings, and other manufacturing equipment. You should feel comfortable getting your hands dirty, using hand tools, and moving between office and shop floor settings as needed.
