What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Mapping Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Mapping Designer, you need a solid background in geographic information systems (GIS), cartography, and spatial data analysis, often supported by a degree in geography, geospatial sciences, or a related field. Familiarity with technical tools such as ArcGIS, QGIS, AutoCAD, and remote sensing software, as well as certifications like GISP, is typically required. Strong attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to work independently are valuable soft skills for this role. These skills ensure accurate map creation, effective collaboration with distributed teams, and the ability to meet project requirements in a remote work environment.

Common Search/ComparisonRemote Mapping Designer vs GIS Technician

Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and GIS software skills. However, Remote Mapping Designers focus more on map design and spatial visualization, often working remotely on specific projects. GIS Technicians typically handle data management and support GIS operations, often working on-site. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job opportunity.

What is a Remote Mapping Designer?

A Remote Mapping Designer is a professional who creates, updates, and maintains digital maps and geospatial data from a remote location. They use specialized software to interpret data from various sources such as satellite imagery, GPS, and surveys to produce accurate maps for different industries like urban planning, logistics, or environmental monitoring. The role often involves collaborating with teams virtually and requires strong skills in GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and spatial analysis. Remote Mapping Designers play a crucial role in helping organizations make data-driven decisions related to location and geography.

How does a Remote Mapping Designer typically collaborate with other team members across different locations?

Remote Mapping Designers often work closely with GIS analysts, project managers, and software developers using collaborative tools such as cloud-based mapping platforms, video conferencing, and shared project management systems. Regular virtual meetings and clear communication are essential to ensure alignment on project goals, map specifications, and deadlines. Since team members may be spread across multiple time zones, flexibility and proactive status updates are important for maintaining workflow and addressing challenges efficiently.

Job description

About Transect
Transect is a B2B SaaS startup on a mission to accelerate renewable energy development. Our platform helps solar, wind, BESS, and data center developers discover and assess sites faster — turning months of environmental and regulatory due diligence into hours. We move fast, we care deeply about our users, and we believe great design is a competitive advantage.
The Role
We're hiring a Product Designer to own design end-to-end across our platform. This is a sole-designer role: you'll be the only dedicated designer at the company, working directly with product and engineering to take features from early concept through shipped UI. You'll join at a pivotal moment — we're expanding platform coverage across a broader range of our customers’ workflows, and exploring how AI can be woven directly into the product experience. You'll have real influence over what all of that looks like.
This role reports to our Director of Product.
What You'll Do
  • Own design end-to-end: User experience, user interface, information architecture, and interaction design, for our complex, data-dense B2B SaaS platform
  • Talk directly to customers to deeply understand their pain points, mental models, and jobs-to-be-done, developing strong user empathy for the industries and personas we serve
  • Balance speed with craft — know when to move fast with low-fidelity wireframes and when a polished mockup is what the situation demands
  • Manage and evolve our design system to ensure visual and interaction consistency across the platform
  • Help build a culture of AI curiosity on the product team — share learnings, experiment openly, and help identify where AI can meaningfully accelerate our design and product workflows
  • Support occasional creative projects requested by Marketing or other teams that fall outside core UX design but leverage your broader creative skillset, such as producing product highlight videos for the website

What We're Looking For
  • Minimum 4 years of product design experience, with real range across both research/IA and visual/UI craft — we need a strong generalist, not a specialist in one half of the process
  • Startup or small-team experience, ideally as a sole or founding designer — you know how to prioritize ruthlessly and move without a design team backing you up
  • Experience designing complex, data-dense B2B software, including dashboards, multi-step workflows, interactive map-based tools, and multiple application states
  • Exceptional communication skills – you can articulate design rationale clearly and persuasively to product, engineering, and leadership
  • Collaborative by default — you build trust with cross-functional partners and know how to give and receive design feedback well
  • Strong proficiency with Figma, including component libraries, variables, design tokens, prototyping, and maintaining shared design-system patterns
  • Ability to understand technical constraints, ask the right questions, and work with engineers to identify solutions that balance user needs, delivery effort, maintainability, and product quality
  • Genuine curiosity about AI in product design — either hands-on experience shipping AI-powered features, or a strong point of view on the tradeoffs involved
  • Comfort and confidence operating in a fully remote yet fast-paced environment

Nice to Have
  • Experience or interest in climate tech, energy, infrastructure, or geospatial/mapping products
  • Experience designing for both novice and power users within the same product
  • Experience using AI-assisted design and prototyping tools responsibly to accelerate exploration, documentation, and collaboration without sacrificing design judgment or consistency
  • Familiarity with front-end development concepts such as HTML, CSS, responsive layouts, component-based frameworks, and the practical constraints of web applications

Compensation & Benefits
  • Competitive salary
  • Equity
  • Employee health, dental, and vision insurance, plus basic life, short-term disability, long-term disability, and AD&D. 100% coverage, starting at the beginning of the next month after your start date
  • Access to a 401(k) company-sponsored retirement account
  • Access to other voluntary, employee-paid benefits may be made available and are determined annually
  • Flexible work schedule and vacation policy
