Which remote manufacturing engineering jobs can be done remotely?

Remote manufacturing engineering jobs typically involve tasks such as design, process optimization, and project management that can be performed remotely using CAD software, data analysis tools, and communication platforms. These roles often require strong technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and familiarity with manufacturing processes, with some positions offering flexible or fully remote schedules depending on company policies.

What is a remote manufacturing engineer?

A Remote Manufacturing Engineering job involves designing, optimizing, and improving manufacturing processes while working remotely. Engineers in this role use digital tools, simulations, and virtual collaboration to support production, troubleshoot issues, and implement process improvements. They may work with teams across multiple locations to enhance efficiency, quality, and cost-effectiveness. Strong communication skills, proficiency in CAD and automation software, and familiarity with manufacturing best practices are essential. This role allows companies to leverage global talent while maintaining seamless production operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote manufacturing engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Manufacturing Engineer, a solid background in engineering principles, process optimization, and quality control—often supported by a relevant degree—is essential. Proficiency with CAD software, manufacturing execution systems (MES), and familiarity with certifications such as Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing are highly valued. Strong communication, self-motivation, and critical thinking skills help remote professionals coordinate effectively and solve complex problems from a distance. These competencies are crucial to successfully overseeing manufacturing processes, ensuring product quality, and driving efficiency while collaborating with on-site teams remotely.

Is there a demand for remote manufacturing engineers?

Remote manufacturing engineers are increasingly in demand as companies adopt digital tools and automation technologies. Skills in CAD, process optimization, and remote collaboration platforms enhance job prospects, especially in industries focused on innovation and efficiency.

What are some common challenges faced by remote manufacturing engineers and how are they addressed?

Remote Manufacturing Engineers often face challenges related to collaborating with on-site teams, accessing real-time production data, and troubleshooting issues without being physically present. To overcome these obstacles, they utilize advanced collaboration tools, real-time monitoring software, and maintain regular virtual meetings with plant personnel. Many organizations also provide robust remote access to manufacturing systems and encourage video walkthroughs or live streams from the factory floor. By leveraging technology and proactive communication, remote engineers can stay closely connected with the manufacturing process and contribute effectively to operational improvements.

Senior Mechanical Designer

Voltify

Los Angeles, CA • Remote

$120K - $155K/yr

Full-time

Posted 15 days ago

Job description

Who Are We:

At Voltify, we are building the next generation of rail - battery locomotives that fast charge autonomously and dynamically through a dedicated self-sustained microgrid network.

We are bringing back the power to the industry and eliminating the dependency on fossil fuels.

Lowering the rail industries main expense - energy - by more than 20%.

This is over $3B yearly just in North America.

We are already working with some of the largest global rail companies with over $50M in contingent orders.

We have raised over $30M from top tier funds and strategics and rapidly growing.

Our founding team has a proven track record in building billion $ public companies in renewable energy and infrastructure.

About The Role:

We are looking for a Mechanical Designer to lead our transition to a managed PDM environment and own the day-to-day organization of the engineering team's SolidWorks data. You'll generate assembly and detail drawings that go straight to manufacturing, and work closely with our remote Manufacturing Engineer supporting the rebuild shops to make sure design intent translates cleanly onto the shop floor.

This is a foundational role: the standards, structure, and workflows you put in place now will shape how a fast-growing engineering team manages CAD data going forward.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the effort to migrate and organize company CAD files into a SolidWorks PDM vault, establishing folder structure, naming conventions, and file states
  • Configure and administer SolidWorks PDM - workflows, revision schemes, permissions, and BOM structure - to support a growing engineering team
  • Manage and maintain the team's SolidWorks model and drawing library, keeping parts, assemblies, and drawings organized, current, and free of duplicate or orphaned data
  • Generate assembly drawings, detail drawings, and documentation packages for manufacturing, ensuring company standards
  • Work closely with the remote Manufacturing Engineer supporting the Huntington and Jacksonville rebuild shops, translating design intent into manufacturable drawings and responding to shop-floor questions and redlines
  • Establish and enforce CAD modeling standards, drawing templates, and title block/BOM conventions across the engineering team
  • Train engineers and designers on PDM check-in/check-out procedures, revision control, and best practices
  • Support engineering change orders (ECOs), ensuring CAD data and drawings are updated and released correctly
  • Contribute to component and subassembly design work as needed - we're a small, fast-moving engineering team and this role isn't purely administrative

Qualification:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or equivalent experience
  • Strong proficiency in SolidWorks, including large assembly modeling and drawing creation
  • Experience administering or configuring a PDM system (SolidWorks PDM/PDM Professional preferred)
  • Experience creating assembly and detail drawings to support manufacturing
  • Familiarity with GD&T and standard drafting practices
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail managing large CAD data sets
  • Comfortable working cross-functionally with remote manufacturing and production teams

Advantages:

  • Experience creating wiring harness diagrams or electrical schematics
  • Experience administering SolidWorks PDM in a growing/scaling engineering organization
  • Background supporting rail, marine, or heavy-duty off-highway equipment
  • Experience with ECO/PLM processes
  • Familiarity with rebuild or retrofit manufacturing environments
Employment Type: FULL_TIME
