What is Remote Legal Design?

Remote Legal Design refers to the practice of applying design thinking methodologies to legal services, processes, or products while working remotely. Legal designers use tools from fields like user experience (UX), service design, and visual communication to make legal information more accessible and user-friendly. By working remotely, they collaborate with clients, lawyers, and stakeholders using digital platforms to ideate, prototype, and implement solutions. This approach helps bridge the gap between complex legal content and the needs of users, even when participants are not in the same physical location.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a remote legal designer?

To thrive as a Remote Legal Designer, you need a solid grasp of legal principles, design thinking methodologies, and experience with user-centered problem solving, often supported by a background in law or legal studies. Familiarity with digital design tools (such as Figma or Adobe Creative Suite) and collaboration platforms is typically expected, along with knowledge of legal tech systems. Strong communication, creativity, and the ability to empathize with users help set you apart in conveying complex legal information clearly and accessibly. These skills and qualities are vital for creating innovative, effective legal solutions that improve client understanding and user experience in a remote work environment.

How do remote legal designers typically collaborate with legal teams and clients across different locations?

Remote Legal Design professionals often work closely with legal teams, clients, and stakeholders using digital collaboration platforms such as video conferencing, shared document tools, and virtual whiteboards. Effective communication and structured workflows are key, as these roles require translating complex legal concepts into user-friendly formats across geographical boundaries. Regular check-ins, clear documentation, and agile project management help ensure alignment and maintain project momentum despite remote work challenges. Collaborating virtually also allows for flexibility and access to a broader pool of expertise, enriching the design process.

Job description

The Legal Advisory Team (LAT) serves as the key strategic partner to PERSUIT's clients. We are seeking a senior, strategic, and operationally experienced Legal Advisory Manager to lead high-impact advisory engagements and elevate the maturity of outside counsel management programs across our client base.
This role goes beyond individual client delivery. The Legal Advisory Manager will lead complex advisory workstreams, manage and mentor consultants and analysts, and help define the standards and playbooks that shape both PERSUIT's methodology and broader market best practices.
The ideal candidate brings deep, end-to-end experience in outside counsel management, spanning matter intake, matter management, legal project management (LPM), alternative fee arrangements, e-billing, and invoice review through payment. This individual understands how legal departments operate holistically and can translate that expertise into scalable frameworks and measurable client impact.
By joining PERSUIT, you will not only advise sophisticated legal departments but also help build the infrastructure, thought leadership, and best practices that define the future of outside counsel management.
This role is open to U.S.-based candidates only. While the position is remote, we have a strong preference for candidates located in New York.
Candidates must have current, valid work authorization in the country where the role is based. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide sponsorship for visas or work permits at this time.
Target base salary range between $157,000 - $181,000.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Client Advisory
  • Lead complex outside counsel management engagements across corporate legal departments.
  • Serve as a senior trusted advisor to executive stakeholders, including General Counsel, Heads of Legal Operations, and Procurement leaders.
  • Provide end-to-end advisory across matter intake, panel design, strategic sourcing, fee structuring, legal project management, e-billing, invoice review, and spend governance.
  • Translate data and operational insights into strategic recommendations that improve cost control, performance management, and program maturity.
Team Leadership & Project Oversight
  • Lead project execution alongside Consultants and Analysts, ensuring high-quality, on-time delivery.
  • Provide mentorship, coaching, and structured feedback to junior team members.
  • Oversee workstreams, manage timelines, and ensure consistency in advisory methodology and outputs.
Best Practices & Playbook Development
  • Develop and refine standardized frameworks, playbooks, templates, and methodologies for outside counsel management.
  • Codify repeatable advisory approaches across intake, matter management, LPM, panel governance, and e-billing.
  • Contribute to evolving PERSUIT's advisory model and internal knowledge base.
Data-Driven Strategy
  • Lead sophisticated spend analyses and diagnostic assessments to uncover trends, risks, and optimization opportunities.
  • Guide consultants and analysts in advanced data interpretation and storytelling.
  • Ensure advisory recommendations are grounded in measurable financial and operational impact.
Thought Leadership & Market Influence
  • Contribute to webinars, reports, and industry events.
  • Represent LAT in client and prospect engagements.
  • Help position PERSUIT as a market leader in outside counsel management strategy and innovation.
Cross-Functional Alignment
  • Partner closely with Client Experience, Sales, Product, Engineering, Marketing, and Data teams to ensure alignment between market needs and product evolution.
  • Provide structured client feedback to influence roadmap and go-to-market strategies.

Requirements
Professional Experience
  • Minimum of 8-10 years of relevant experience.
  • Significant client-facing consulting or in-house legal operations leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated experience leading complex projects and managing stakeholders at senior executive levels.
Industry Background
  • Deep, practical experience in outside counsel management across the full lifecycle, including:
    • Matter intake and governance
    • Matter management systems
    • Legal project management (LPM)
    • Alternative fee arrangements
    • Strategic sourcing and panel management
    • E-billing implementation and invoice review processes
  • Experience within corporate legal departments, legal operations, consulting, or law firm pricing/operations functions.
Technical & Analytical Skills
  • Advanced data literacy with the ability to independently manipulate, analyze, and interpret large data sets.
  • Experience translating financial and operational data into executive-level recommendations.
  • Comfort with Excel and analytical tools; familiarity with e-billing or matter management platforms is strongly preferred.
Education
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • JD or equivalent legal qualification preferred but not required.

Attributes

Strategic Operator: Able to zoom out to define vision while also diving into operational details and analysis.
Builder Mindset: Passionate about developing frameworks, playbooks, and scalable advisory infrastructure.
Collaborative Leader: Effective at mentoring junior team members and working cross-functionally.
