Job description

International SOS

This job posting is for talent pooling for an upcoming project in Papua New Guinea. All applications will be reviewed, and qualified candidates will be contacted for further discussions in preparation for project deployment.

Overall, Purpose of the Job

The Senior Medical Officer (SMO) primary function is patient care at both the primary and emergency medicine level including medical evacuation support to onsite employees and/or local community. Additionally, the SMO is responsible for site specific community health and occupational health programs as determined by individual client contracts.

At all times, the SMO shall carry out their duties within the tenets of the Hippocratic Oath, consistent with ethical and best medical practice.

B. Key Responsibilities (Critical responsibilities and skills of this position, listed in order of importance)

Patient Care

• Undertake clinical consultations and provide a high standard of service and care to patients.

• Develop a family orientated clinic practice with continuity of care and appropriate follow-up and referral, on both outpatient and inpatient level.

• Assist with the implementation of preventative care strategies, including structuring and performing medical screening services.

• Manage the delivery of competent and professional health services according to the International SOS standards.

• Assist with ensuring appropriate patient triage and flow within the clinic.

• Provide leadership for medical related issues to the onsite medical staff.

• Provide training and education to onsite medical staff on relevant topics.

• Perform rounds in the emergency room and short-term inpatient beds including morning and evening handovers to other medical personnel when required.

• Coordinate with the Assistance Centre teams on the procedures required and preparation of patients to facilitate evacuation

Quality Assurance and Administration

• Liaise with the Medical Services (MS) operations and management to optimise quality assurance and ensure that appropriate medical outcomes are consistently attained with respect to the provision of clinical services.

• Take responsibility for quality of medical service delivery as per International SOS guidelines and standards.

• Ensure that patient's medical files and documentation are maintained to highest standards and in accordance with International SOS guidelines.

• Assist in the maintenance, selection and control of the medical equipment and supplies available when required.

Client and Community Relationship Management

• Demonstrate an understanding of the clients' contractual agreements and work with the Sales and Marketing department to ensure that relationships with International SOS clients are at all times positive and consistent with the contractual obligations.

• Directly responsible to respond to any client related complaints which arise using the International SOS procedure guidelines in conjunction with the Country and/or Regional Medical Director.

• Work with members of the senior management team on initiatives to enhance the medical service profile and activity.

• Participate actively in appropriate social and professional activities to promote International SOS services.

• Presentation of important health topics to interested community groups

• Facilitate effective positive teamwork and clear channels of communication both internally and externally.

Required Work Experience (Brief description of the job-related experience needed to perform the job)

• Medical Doctor with 5 years plus post-graduation experience gained within Accident & Emergency and General Practice.

• Sound knowledge of the principles of general practice management and administration.

Required Qualifications (Brief description of the educational background needed to perform the job)

• Must hold a Fellowship in Emergency Medicine / Masters in Emergency Medicine

• Medical Degree essential with current medical license in the home country.

• Current ACLS certification.

• Other medical certification as required on each site e.g. PALS, HUET, BOSIET.

Required Languages (Brief description of the language skills needed to perform the job)

• Excellent written and spoken English. Additional language capability is an advantage.

• National language in country of assignment (when required).

Travel / Rotation Requirements (Brief description of any travel or rotation requirements)

• Rotation and travel based on assignment.

• Flexibility for last minute requests for short- and long-term travel commitments.
