Job description

Brown and Caldwell (BC), a leading employee-owned environmental engineering firm, is currently seeking a Senior Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) Engineer to collaborate with our local and national teams. In this role, your responsibilities will include developing I&C designs (specifications, control strategies, wiring diagrams, P&IDs), conducting control system startups for industrial and municipal projects, and partnering with client development teams with the goal of supporting proposal development.
The I&C Engineering role provides technical leadership and delivery for control system designs, including specifications, control strategies, P&IDs, wiring schematics, and associated design databases (equipment lists, instrument lists, I/O lists, panel schedules, instrument data sheets, etc.). The position oversees control panel and system architecture design, develops advanced process monitoring and control strate-gies, optimizes industrial control networks, and ensures compliance with industrial control system cyber-security requirements. The role also maintains technical quality for controls-related electrical design and leads the selection and application of process instrumentation and control equipment.
We are looking for candidates who have a proven track record of design, testing, and starting up industrial control systems for municipal water/wastewater work. A successful candidate will be able to efficiently operate in a team environment and be comfortable interfacing not only with their engineering team and colleagues but also with Project Managers, Design Managers, Client Service Managers, as well as Client leadership and stakeholders. This role requires the ability to integrate and apply BC's service offerings and talent to help our clients solve their most challenging issues.
Remote work is allowed; the ideal candidate will be located near one of our offices in either Denver, Salt Lake City, Boise, Seattle, Portland, Dallas or Houston.
Responsibilities
  • Lead projects or initiatives of strategic importance.
  • Provide expert analysis and resolution of complex problems without predefined solutions.
  • Design and review P&IDs, wiring schematics, control panel and control system architecture design documents.
  • Understand and design industrial process control networking in light of industrial control system cyber security concepts.
  • Oversee controls-related electrical design and process instrumentation equipment.
  • Field investigation, assessment and evaluation of existing control systems.
  • Flexibility to adapt and execute various additional assignments based on evolving needs.

Mentorship
  • Provide mentorship, guidance, support, and knowledge-sharing to help less experienced team mem-bers develop their skills and grow within their roles

Skills and Competencies
  • Deep understanding of I&C Engineering, including the use and interpretation of specifications, P&IDs, wiring schematics, control panels, and system architecture design documents.
  • Advanced knowledge of industrial process control networking, control strategies and control system cyber security concepts.
  • Extensive knowledge of process instrumentation equipment, including controller and HMI systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to adhere to guidelines, regulations and follow instructions, with keen attention to detail and problem-solving capacity.

Experience
  • Typically, a minimum of 10 years of related work experience in I&C engineering or related field.
  • Typically, will become certified in BC's Subject Matter Specialist (SMS) Framework and progress through the SMS competencies.

Preferred Experience
  • 20+ years of experience as an instrumentation and control design engineer for government, municipal, and/or industrial water and wastewater projects, or private-sector clients in industries like pharmaceutical, chemical, food products, petrochemical, or pulp and paper.
  • Prior experience leading/managing I&C engineers in support of multi-disciplinary design teams.
  • Experience in design, testing, and startup of industrial process automation systems.
  • Experience with industrial process control networking, including Fieldbus technologies.
  • Ability to work with engineers/designers in Revit/BIM environments along with AutoCAD or Bentley P&ID software.
  • Experience with industrial control cybersecurity.

Education
  • A bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related field or equivalent experience is required.
  • Has achieved or is working towards achieving professional registration (P.E.).

Preferred Education
  • In addition to electrical engineering, a bachelor's degree in mechanical, electronics, chemical, or related engineering field or equivalent experience.

Preferred Registrations and Memberships
  • PE (Professional Engineer) license.
  • International Society of Automation (ISA).
  • IEEE Industrial Automation Society (IAS).

Salary Range: The anticipated starting pay range for this position is based on the employee's primary work location and may be more or less depending upon skills, experience, and education. These ranges may be modified in the future.
Location A: $117,000 - $159,000
Location B: $128,000 - $175,000
Location C: $140,000 - $191,000
