The Health Information Specialist performs medical record services and manages patient information by analyzing patient data denial remits and determining what the payor requires to adjudicate the claim; analyzes the denial and notifies the manager of new or different remit issues in work queues. The specialist works timely and notifies the supervisor when there are any delays in keeping work queues empty.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, or a related field or Associate's Degree PLUS 2 years of medical or legal experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualification:
  • RHIA or RHIT preferred

  • Review insurance remits and determine what medical records the insurance company needs to adjudicate patient claims.
  • Determine based on the request where and how the records are processed and where the records need to be sent.
  • Designate whether records need to be printed, uploaded to portals, and/or transmitted electronically.
  • Learn each payor and work with the payer's guidelines.
  • Work within the timeframes expected and report any delays in processing.
  • Contact insurance companies to ensure records sent are received at the appropriate insurance destination.
  • Communicate and interact with payors as required.
  • Performs other duties and/or projects as assigned.
