What is a remote geomembrane specialist?

A remote geomembrane specialist is a professional who oversees the selection, installation, and maintenance of geomembrane liners, often working remotely through digital tools, site monitoring technologies, and remote communication. Geomembranes are impermeable synthetic membranes used as liners or barriers to control fluid or gas movement in civil engineering projects such as landfills, mining, and water containment. Remote geomembrane specialists help ensure the integrity and performance of these systems without always being physically present onsite. Their responsibilities may include data analysis, project coordination, quality assurance, and providing technical guidance to onsite teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Geomembrane Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Geomembrane Technician, you need a solid understanding of geosynthetics, field inspection protocols, and construction site safety, often supported by relevant technical training or certifications. Familiarity with geomembrane installation equipment, GPS surveying tools, and quality assurance systems is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective remote communication are essential soft skills in this role. These combined abilities ensure the correct installation, integrity, and longevity of geomembrane systems in environmental and engineering projects.

What are some common challenges faced by remote geomembrane specialists, and how can they be addressed?

Remote geomembrane specialists often encounter challenges such as limited on-site presence, coordinating with cross-functional teams from a distance, and ensuring installation quality without direct supervision. Overcoming these issues typically involves using advanced monitoring technologies, frequent virtual meetings with project teams, and detailed documentation to track progress and resolve issues quickly. Building strong communication channels and leveraging digital tools are key strategies to maintain high-quality standards and effective collaboration in remote settings.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Codes & Approvals Manager provides leadership and governance over building code compliance, third-party approvals, and technical standards to ensure roofing systems and materials meet regulatory, certification, and performance requirements. This role operates as a visible program owner, responsible not only for technical compliance, but for building the systems, communication, and coordination required to support timely, consistent, and well-informed business decisions that enable responsible growth.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Codes & Approvals Governance

  • Own governance and oversight of building codes, approvals, and third-party certifications applicable to roofing systems and materials, including organizations such as UL, FM, ICC, and other authorities having jurisdiction.
  • Serve as the technical authority on code interpretation, approval requirements, and compliance strategy for roofing systems and assemblies.
  • Define approval scopes and testing requirements for products, systems, markets, and regions where approvals are required or gaps exist.

Testing, Certification, and Maintenance

  • Lead testing, certification, renewal, and maintenance activities for product approvals and listings.
  • Define testing strategies, sequencing, and renewal cadence aligned with business priorities and risk considerations.
  • Coordinate with third-party testing agencies and certification bodies to ensure predictable timelines and outcomes.

Program Management, Visibility, and Communication

  • Develop and maintain project and portfolio management systems that provide clear visibility into Codes & Approvals workload, priorities, risks, dependencies, and timelines.
  • Identify key stakeholders for Codes & Approvals initiatives and establish appropriate communication cadence based on impact and risk.
  • Provide regular, structured updates to Technical Services leadership and cross-functional partners that clearly communicate:
    • Status and progress
    • Risks and constraints
    • Required inputs and decision points
  • Ensure Codes & Approvals initiatives are coordinated effectively across Product, Design, Sales, and Technical Services.

Decision-Making and Risk Management

  • Interpret and apply codes, standards, and approval requirements within established governance frameworks.
  • Approve or deny the use of systems, assemblies, or details based on compliance and approval status.
  • Identify, assess, and communicate compliance-related risks associated with deviations, non-standard applications, and evolving code interpretations.
  • Make informed decisions under uncertainty by documenting assumptions, enabling progress where appropriate, and refining direction as additional information becomes available.
  • Escalate decisions only when prioritization between speed and risk cannot be resolved with available information, providing clear technical and business context.

Documentation and Systems

  • Establish and maintain controlled, authoritative documentation for approvals, test reports, listings, assumptions, and compliance records.
  • Ensure approvals documentation and guidance are accurate, current, accessible, and consistently applied.
  • Collaborate with Technical Operations to translate approvals data into scalable tools, dashboards, and reference systems.

Leadership and Continuous Improvement

  • Lead and develop Codes & Approvals execution resources responsible for coordination, tracking, and documentation.
  • Build scalable processes that reduce reliance on individual expertise and improve predictability.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives aligned with the Technical Services Operating objectives

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Architecture, or a relate technical discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • 7+ years of experience in building codes, approvals, certifications, regulatory compliance, or related technical roles.
  • Demonstrated experience working with building codes, standards, and third-party certification processes.
  • Strong technical judgment with the ability to interpret and apply code intent.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to balance technical rigor with practical business enablement.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
