Remote Founding Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote founding engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Founding Engineer, you need a deep background in software development, systems architecture, and ideally startup experience, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Mastery of cloud platforms, version control (like Git), and familiarity with frameworks relevant to the product, as well as experience with DevOps tools, are typically required. Exceptional problem-solving, self-motivation, and strong communication skills help remote founding engineers stand out, especially in fast-paced, ambiguous environments. These combined skills and qualities are crucial for building scalable products, driving innovation, and collaborating effectively while working remotely in an early-stage company.

What is a remote founding engineer?

A Remote Founding Engineer is a key technical team member who helps launch and build a startup from its earliest stages, working entirely or primarily from a remote location. They are responsible for designing and developing the initial product, making crucial technical decisions, and often establishing the company's engineering culture. Founding Engineers typically collaborate closely with the company’s founders and may have a significant influence on the startup’s direction. Their role often includes both hands-on coding and broader responsibilities such as hiring, setting up processes, and scaling technology as the company grows.

What are some unique challenges and rewards of being a remote founding engineer in an early-stage startup?

As a Remote Founding Engineer, you'll face the challenge of building core product features from scratch while collaborating virtually with other founders and early team members. This often means balancing rapid, iterative development with high-quality code, all while helping to set technical direction and culture remotely. The role is highly rewarding for those who thrive in dynamic environments and value broad ownership, as your contributions directly shape the product and the company's future. You'll also gain valuable experience in both technical leadership and startup operations, positioning yourself for significant career growth and potential equity rewards.

Job description

Location: Remote (United States)
Remote Full-time
Compensation: $130K - $200K
Our client is a high-growth, early-stage developer infrastructure startup that has recently secured $5M in seed funding from top-tier venture capital firms and prominent angel investors from OpenAI, Google, and Databricks. The company provides a modern approach to infrastructure-as-code purpose-built for the AI era. Their platform enables startups and enterprise organizations to deploy complex software and AI agents directly into secure, private customer cloud environments, safely unlocking access to sensitive data that cannot leave strict compliance boundaries.
As the Founding Developer Relations (DevRel) Engineer, you will be the inaugural voice of the platform, taking a product with robust engineering roots and building out its entire developer content ecosystem from scratch. This is a high-ownership role within a lean, high-impact team where you will design tutorials, reference applications, videos, and guides that help developers seamlessly ship AI applications into cloud environments.
Key Responsibilities
  • Content Creation & Strategy: Own the end-to-end developer-facing content pipeline, creating video content, deep-dive tutorials, documentation, and technical blog posts.
  • Technical Demos & Templates: Build fully functional example applications, open-source templates, and reference projects using TypeScript to showcase the capabilities of the platform.
  • Community & Channel Ownership: Manage and grow the community across developer touchpoints, including GitHub, YouTube, technical documentation, and social platforms.
  • Product Feedback Loop: Actively dogfood the platform to identify user friction points, gathering community feedback to influence the core engineering and product roadmap.
  • Events & Engagement: Represent the client's platform at industry events, traveling to major tech hubs like San Francisco and New York every 2-3 months for community engagement.

Requirements
  • Experience: 3 to 10 years of experience in developer relations, technical content creation, or developer tooling, preferably with a track record of 5+ years of total technical experience.
  • Sector Background: Prior experience at an early-stage startup (Series A or earlier) within a developer infrastructure, cloud platform, or AI/ML tooling environment.
  • Technical Proficiency: Fluent in TypeScript with the ability to independently write code, build working demos, and architect example applications. Strong familiarity with cloud infrastructure concepts and tools (e.g., AWS, Azure, Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform).
  • Content Portfolio: A visible, public technical content portfolio demonstrating high-quality work across mediums such as YouTube videos, technical blogs, or detailed GitHub repositories.
  • Location & Travel: Based in the United States with the ability to travel to San Francisco every 2-3 months for collaborative sessions and industry events.

Benefits
  • Competitive base salary ($130,000 - $200,000) along with meaningful founding-team equity.
  • Remote-friendly work environment within the United States.
  • Dedicated travel and assembly budget for team visits and community events.
  • The opportunity to shape a technical product from the ground floor as part of a high-growth startup.

Interview Process
The interview process is designed to be efficient, collaborative, and reflective of daily operations:
  1. Introductory Call (30 Minutes): A high-level introductory conversation with the Founder/CEO to explore your background, motivations, and overall alignment.
  2. Technical & Creative Working Session (1.5 Hours): A hands-on, collaborative session with the Founder/CEO to build a technical project from scratch, simulating real-world day-to-day work, communication, and technical strategy.
