What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Founding Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Founding Engineer, you need a deep background in software development, systems architecture, and ideally startup experience, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Mastery of cloud platforms, version control (like Git), and familiarity with frameworks relevant to the product, as well as experience with DevOps tools, are typically required. Exceptional problem-solving, self-motivation, and strong communication skills help remote founding engineers stand out, especially in fast-paced, ambiguous environments. These combined skills and qualities are crucial for building scalable products, driving innovation, and collaborating effectively while working remotely in an early-stage company.

What are some unique challenges and rewards of being a Remote Founding Engineer in an early-stage startup?

As a Remote Founding Engineer, you'll face the challenge of building core product features from scratch while collaborating virtually with other founders and early team members. This often means balancing rapid, iterative development with high-quality code, all while helping to set technical direction and culture remotely. The role is highly rewarding for those who thrive in dynamic environments and value broad ownership, as your contributions directly shape the product and the company's future. You'll also gain valuable experience in both technical leadership and startup operations, positioning yourself for significant career growth and potential equity rewards.

What is a Remote Founding Engineer?

A Remote Founding Engineer is a key technical team member who helps launch and build a startup from its earliest stages, working entirely or primarily from a remote location. They are responsible for designing and developing the initial product, making crucial technical decisions, and often establishing the company's engineering culture. Founding Engineers typically collaborate closely with the company’s founders and may have a significant influence on the startup’s direction. Their role often includes both hands-on coding and broader responsibilities such as hiring, setting up processes, and scaling technology as the company grows.

Job description

Founding Engineer

Aesthetic Enterprises Scottsdale, AZ (Hybrid or Remote in U.S. — Phoenix preferred) $140,000 base + annual performance bonus + significant transaction-based upside

About Us

We're a fast-growing licensor in the regenerative health and hair restoration space, operating a network of 40+ licensed clinics across the United States. Our model gives independent operators a proven business system, premium products, and centralized marketing and training support.

We're entering a high-growth phase. Patient demand is strong and our offering is differentiated. Technology is the lever we're under-investing in — and that's where you come in.

The Role

We're hiring our first dedicated engineer to own the technology that powers our entire business: connecting our 40+ clinics' POS systems (Square) to our CRM (GoHighLevel), building the analytics layer that gives us real-time visibility across the network, automating workflows that currently consume our team's time, and shipping new clinic websites as we expand.

You'll work directly with the co-founders. There is no engineering team yet — you are it. You'll set the standards, choose the tools, and own the architecture.

This is not a role for someone who wants tickets handed to them. It's a role for someone who hears a business problem, sketches a solution, and ships it that week — using whatever combination of code, AI tools, and integrations gets the job done.

What You'll Build in the First 90 Days

Priority 1: Unified Network Analytics Dashboard. Connect Square POS data from 40+ clinic locations with GoHighLevel CRM data, marketing platform data, and internal operations data into a single source of truth. We need to see, in real time: revenue by location, close rates by sales consultant, marketing spend efficiency by source, royalty performance, and dozens of other operational metrics. This is the single most strategically important project in the business.

Priority 2: Royalty automation. Automate the calculation, reporting, and collection workflow for licensee royalties based on real POS data — eliminating self-reporting friction and giving us verified visibility into network performance.

Priority 3: Automation triage. Audit our manual workflows (lead routing, follow-ups, reporting, onboarding new clinics) and start systematically automating the ones with the highest time-savings ROI.

What You'll Own Beyond 90 Days
  • New clinic websites — built on a standardized framework so each launch takes days, not months
  • AI-augmented workflows across the business (lead qualification, sales coaching, content generation, operational decision support)
  • Integrations with any new platform we add (marketing tools, communication tools, financial systems)
  • Continuous identification of bottlenecks and inefficiencies — and the autonomy to fix them
  • Technical infrastructure decisions as we scale toward and through a major business milestone
Who You Are
  • A generalist who loves the whole stack. You're equally comfortable wiring up an API integration, building a React dashboard, deploying a Next.js website, and prompting an AI agent to handle a workflow. You don't pick favorites between front-end, back-end, and integrations — they're all just tools.
  • A fast shipper. You'd rather have a working v1 in production by Friday than a perfect v1 in production in two months. You believe in iteration over perfection.
  • Fluent in AI-augmented development. You use Cursor, Claude Code, Copilot, or whatever the current best tools are. You think about AI not as a buzzword but as a multiplier on your output. You've shipped real things that wouldn't have been possible — or would have taken 10x longer — without these tools.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity. You'd rather be given a business problem than a technical spec. You ask clarifying questions, propose solutions, and own outcomes.
  • Pragmatic over ideological. You'll use the right tool for the job, not the most elegant one. You'd rather glue together three SaaS tools with Zapier and a webhook than build something from scratch when speed matters.
  • A clear communicator. You can explain technical trade-offs to a non-technical founder in plain English. You document what you build so it doesn't all live in your head.
Required Experience
  • 5+ years of full-stack software engineering experience
  • Demonstrated experience integrating APIs and building data pipelines between business systems (POS, CRM, marketing platforms, etc.)
  • Proficiency in modern web development (React or Next.js preferred; comfortable with Node.js or Python backends)
  • Experience building analytics dashboards or business intelligence tools
  • Hands-on experience with AI-augmented development workflows (Cursor, Claude Code, Copilot, or similar)
  • Experience working in startups, small teams, or founder-led environments where you owned end-to-end delivery
Strong Pluses
  • Direct experience with GoHighLevel — its API, its quirks, its integration patterns
  • Direct experience with Square POS — particularly Square's API and multi-location data
  • Experience in healthcare, aesthetics, regenerative medicine, wellness, or franchise/multi-unit retail
  • Experience integrating internal tools with platforms like Stripe, Twilio, SendGrid, Make/Zapier/n8n, Retool, Airtable, Supabase
  • Track record of shipping AI-integrated features (LLM-powered automation, RAG systems, AI agents)
  • Background as a solo founder, founding engineer at a startup, or technical consultant who's owned multiple greenfield projects
What We Offer
  • $140,000 base salary with annual performance bonus and meaningful transaction-based upside
  • Significant cash bonus tied to a strategic business milestone we're targeting in the next 12-18 months — paid at close
  • Modern tooling budget for hardware, AI subscriptions (Cursor, Claude, etc.), and development tools
  • Direct partnership with founders — you'll work with us daily, not three layers down an org chart
  • Full autonomy on technical decisions — we trust you to choose the tools and architecture
  • Hybrid or remote flexibility, with a preference for candidates in or near Phoenix who can be on-site as needed
