What is a Remote Food job?

A Remote Food job involves working in the food industry while operating from a remote location, such as a home office or co-working space. These jobs can include roles like food writers, nutrition consultants, menu planners, remote chefs, and customer support for food delivery services. Many businesses in the food sector now offer remote positions for tasks like marketing, business development, and online culinary education. While some roles may require occasional on-site visits, most tasks can be completed using digital tools.

What are the common challenges faced while working in a remote food industry role?

Working in a remote food-related position often means adapting to virtual communication, which can present challenges in clearly conveying ideas or instructions related to food or service. Staying connected with clients, teammates, or partners in different time zones can also require flexibility and strong organizational skills. Additionally, maintaining a deep understanding of current food trends or operational best practices may take extra effort since you aren’t physically present in restaurants, kitchens, or production facilities. Addressing these challenges often involves proactive communication, ongoing professional development, and effective time management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Remote Food position, and why are they important?

Remote food-related roles, such as remote food writers, consultants, or customer service representatives, require strong communication skills, deep industry knowledge, and relevant experience in food and hospitality. Familiarity with digital collaboration tools, content management systems, and sometimes nutrition or food safety certifications can be beneficial. Resourcefulness, attention to detail, and self-motivation enable professionals to manage tasks independently and adjust to virtual teamwork. These abilities ensure high-quality work and efficient collaboration in a remote, food-focused environment.

Duke University:

Duke University was created in 1924 through an indenture of trust by James Buchanan Duke. Today, Duke is regarded as one of America's leading research universities. Located in Durham, North Carolina, Duke is positioned in the heart of the Research Triangle, which is ranked annually as one of the best places in the country to work and live. Duke has more than 15,000 students who study and conduct research in its 10 undergraduate, graduate and professional schools. With about 40,000 employees, Duke is the third largest private employer in North Carolina, and it now has international programs in more than 150 countries.

Be You. Be Bold. Choose Duke.

Be You.

At Duke, we celebrate individuality, curiosity, and the unique perspectives each member of our community brings. As a Graduate Research Administrative Intern with the World Food Policy Center (WFPC) in the Sanford School of Public Policy, you'll contribute your analytical skills to meaningful research that explores how consumers engage with online grocery shopping and food labeling.

You'll join a collaborative research environment where graduate students and recent alumni work closely with policy experts to generate insights that inform food systems and public policy.

Be Bold.

This role offers the opportunity to apply research and data analysis skills to a real-world, grant-supported project funded through the NIFA Online Groceries initiative.

What You'll Do:

Analyze and interpret data from a WFPC study conducted in summer 2025, with a focus on consumer preferences related to food labels

Collaborate with WFPC research staff to support ongoing analysis and reporting

Participate in bi-weekly Zoom meetings with the WFPC Associate Director and research team

Manage tasks independently in a primarily remote work environment while maintaining clear and timely communication

What We're Looking For:

Current graduate students or recent graduates with strong research and analytical skills

Experience or interest in data analysis, food policy, or consumer behavior research

Excellent time management, organization, and communication skills

Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a remote or hybrid setting

Choose Duke.

At Duke, you'll find purpose-driven work, supportive mentorship, and flexible opportunities designed to fit your academic and professional goals.

Pay Rate: $18.00/hour (Sanford School rate for recent graduates)

Time Commitment: 10-19.99 hours per week

Work Arrangement: Primarily remote; office space available if needed

Professional Exposure: Direct collaboration with policy researchers and leadership at WFPC
