Remote Food Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Food Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Food Engineer, you need a background in food science or engineering, along with experience in food safety, quality control, and process optimization. Familiarity with software for data analysis, remote monitoring systems, and industry regulations (such as HACCP certification) is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective virtual communication, and project management abilities set outstanding candidates apart. These competencies are crucial to ensuring food product quality and safety while efficiently collaborating with distributed teams and stakeholders.

What is a Remote Food Engineer?

A Remote Food Engineer is a professional who applies engineering principles to the development, production, and improvement of food products and processes, while working remotely outside of a traditional on-site facility. They may be involved in tasks such as designing food manufacturing systems, ensuring food safety and quality, and optimizing processing techniques—all coordinated via digital tools and communication platforms. Remote Food Engineers often collaborate with teams online, use specialized software to model processes, and provide virtual support to production facilities. This role allows for flexibility and can support companies in multiple locations without the need for constant physical presence.

How does working remotely as a Food Engineer impact collaboration with lab or production teams?

As a Remote Food Engineer, you will often collaborate with on-site lab or production teams through virtual meetings, detailed documentation, and real-time data sharing platforms. While you may not be physically present in the facility, effective communication skills and familiarity with digital collaboration tools are essential. You may participate in regular video calls to troubleshoot issues, review process improvements, or provide technical guidance. Building strong relationships with on-site staff and maintaining clear, thorough records can help overcome the challenges posed by remote work and ensure project success.

Key responsibilities

  • Serve as the day-to-day healthcare advisor to the B2B team on deals, product launches, and operational questions involving healthcare counterparties.

  • Draft, review, and negotiate B2B contracts including master services agreements, statements of work, BAAs, data use agreements, and program-specific addenda.

  • Lead HIPAA compliance for the B2B line by structuring Business Associate Agreements, advising on permitted uses and disclosures of PHI, evaluating data flows, and partnering with security, product, and engineering teams.

Job description

About the Team:

The B2B team operates like a startup within CookUnity - an entrepreneurial, fast-paced, and innovative team that is charting a bold new path by bringing these same exceptional culinary experiences to businesses, organizations, and their employees. We sell smart fridge deployments, employee meal programs, and workplace food solutions to some of the most recognizable companies in the country. We're scaling fast and need a leader who can run with us.

The role:

We are hiring a [Fractional] Healthcare & Commercial Counsel to support the rapid growth of our B2B line of business. This role is designed for an experienced healthcare attorney who wants meaningful, substantive work [without a full-time commitment]. You will be the embedded legal partner for our B2B commercial team - advising on all matters related to the B2B function, from commercial matters to healthcare regulatory matters - while reporting into and collaborating closely with the General Counsel. This is a non-litigation role focused on advisory, transactional, commercial, and compliance work.

What You'll Do
  • Serve as the day-to-day healthcare advisor to the B2B team on deals, product launches, and operational questions, including those involving healthcare counterparties (payors, providers, MA plans, MCOs, digital health, employer health programs, and similar).
  • Draft, review, and negotiate B2B contracts - master services agreements, statements of work, BAAs, data use agreements, and program-specific addenda - against CookUnity's playbook.
  • Lead HIPAA compliance for the B2B line: structure Business Associate Agreements, advise on permitted uses and disclosures of PHI, evaluate data flows, and partner with security, product, and engineering on safeguards and minimum-necessary analysis.
  • Advise on Food is Medicine, Medically Tailored Meals, supplemental benefits (including Medicare Advantage SSBCI and SNP frameworks), Medicaid 1115 waivers, and similar healthcare-funded meal programs.
  • Spot-check exposure under fraud and abuse laws (Anti-Kickback Statute, Stark, beneficiary inducement, state analogs) and elevate complex issues to the GC and outside counsel as appropriate.
  • Support state licensure, telehealth-adjacent, and food-as-medicine regulatory questions as they arise.
  • Help build durable infrastructure: templates, playbooks, training, and internal guidance that scale with the B2B team.
  • Partner with the GC on escalations, novel issues, and risk framing for the executive team.
What You'll Bring
  • J.D. and active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction; in good standing.
  • Minimum 5 years of post-J.D. experience with a substantive focus on healthcare regulatory, healthcare transactional and general commercial matters.
  • Strong contract drafting and negotiation skills in a commercial context.
  • Demonstrated expertise in HIPAA / HITECH (Privacy, Security, and Breach Notification Rules) - including drafting and negotiating BAAs, advising on PHI use cases, and counseling on incident response.
  • Working familiarity with one or more of: Medicare Advantage supplemental benefits (SSBCI / SNP), Medicaid managed care, 1115 waivers, Food is Medicine / Medically Tailored Meals frameworks, state insurance and licensure regimes.
  • Comfortable operating as a [fractional, embedded] legal partner - highly responsive, organized, and able to triage independently.
  • Excellent judgment on when to decide, when to escalate, and when to bring in outside specialists.
Nice to Have
  • Combination of reputable law firm training (with a preference for healthcare regulatory or healthcare transactions practice) and prior in-house experience (again, with a preference for experience at a healthcare company - payor, provider, digital health, PBM, MA plan, or similarly regulated organization).
  • Experience supporting a B2B sales motion.
  • Familiarity with state privacy laws (CCPA/CPRA, Washington My Health My Data Act, and similar) as they intersect with health data.
  • Prior experience advising a food, nutrition, or consumer health company.
Engagement Details
  • [Independent contractor (1099) engagement with CookUnity, Inc.]
  • Approximately 10-20 hours per week, with flexibility to flex up for deal cycles and down during quieter periods, by mutual agreement.
  • Fully remote within the United States; occasional video meetings during U.S. business hours.
  • Compensation: competitive hourly rate, commensurate with experience.
  • Conflicts: candidates must be able to confirm no conflicts with CookUnity's B2B counterparties and customers.
