What is a remote finance startup?

A remote finance startup is a newly established company in the finance sector that operates primarily or entirely online, allowing its employees to work from any location rather than a centralized office. These startups typically offer financial services or products such as digital banking, payment processing, investment platforms, or financial planning tools. By leveraging remote work, they can access a broader talent pool, reduce overhead costs, and often provide more flexible services to customers. Remote finance startups use technology to streamline operations and enhance customer experiences in the financial industry.

What are some common challenges faced when working at a remote finance startup, and how can new hires prepare for them?

Working at a remote finance startup often means adapting to a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment where processes are still being built. New hires may face challenges such as managing time across different time zones, communicating effectively with team members virtually, and prioritizing tasks in a less structured setting. To succeed, it's important to be proactive in communication, comfortable with digital collaboration tools, and adaptable to shifting priorities. Embracing a self-starter mindset and seeking regular feedback can help you integrate quickly and make impactful contributions.

Job description

Controller

Remote [within the US]

ABOUT THE ROLE:

HiddenLayer is hiring a Controller to own accounting end-to-end as the finance function scales. You'll report to the CFO and build the close, controls, and systems a growing business runs on. If you've wanted to take a company through external audit, modernize the finance stack, and own accounting in a SaaS business at this stage โ€” this is that role.

WHO WE ARE:

HiddenLayer protects the world's most valuable technologies from adversarial AI attacks. We were founded by AI professionals and security specialists with first-hand experience of how insidious adversarial AI attacks can be to detect and defend against. Determined to prove that these attacks were preventable, the team developed a unique, patent-pending, productized solution to support organizations in accelerating their adoption of AI securely.

Our dedication to innovation has been recognized by prestigious awards such as RSA's Innovation Sandbox Winner, CB Insights AI 100, CyberTech 100, and SC's Most Promising Early-Stage Start-up.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • Monthly close. You'll own close end-to-end โ€” journal entries through published financials โ€” with a target cadence of 10 business days monthly.
  • Audit readiness and external audit. You'll stand up documentation and controls for external audit, partner with the CFO on firm selection, and manage fieldwork through to a clean opinion.
  • The books. Full GL, AP, AR, treasury, payroll accounting, and revenue recognition. You'll have CFO partnership on technical accounting matters and external support available for heavier lifts (ASC 718, 340-40, SAFE conversion) as needed.
  • Finance systems. You'll own the finance systems roadmap โ€” GL, AP, expense, and billing tooling โ€” and lead evaluations and migrations as the business scales. We want someone who has opinions here.
  • Revenue recognition policy. SaaS subscription, some services, occasional non-standard deals, a reseller arrangement. You'll own the policy, review non-standard contracts before they close, and partner with RevOps on ARR tie-out.

WHO YOU ARE:

  • 7+ years in accounting, with time as Controller or Assistant Controller at a Series A/B (or later) SaaS company
  • CPA
  • Personally owned monthly close in a SaaS business, with a track record of hitting a 10-business-day cadence
  • Been through external audit as the day-to-day internal lead
  • Executed at least one GL migration
  • Owned revenue recognition under ASC 606 in a SaaS environment, including non-standard deals
  • Fluent in SaaS financial metrics and reporting (ARR, deferred revenue, bookings-to-billings, gross margin by revenue type)
  • Worked effectively in a mostly-remote finance org
BONUS:
  • Big 4 or national firm early-career background
  • Experience with modern SaaS-native GLs (Rillet, Campfire, Sage Intacct, NetSuite)
  • Experience with Maxio, Chargebee, Stripe Billing, or similar
  • Prior exposure to federal customers (not GovCon โ€” we do not have DCAA exposure)
  • Experience in cybersecurity, AI infrastructure, or adjacent

WHY HIDDENLAYER?

We're moving at (what feels like) the speed of light. HiddenLayer is a venture-backed company and recently closed a $50M funding round led by M12, Microsoft's Venture Fund, and Moore Strategic Ventures.

Attracting and retaining the very best people is our #1 priority. That's why we offer our team best-in-class benefits, including:

  • Fully Remote: We are a completely remote global team. Though we're distributed, we are intentional about getting the team together a couple of times a year. We offer a generous stipend for your home office setup, annual upgrades to ensure you have a comfortable workspace and a monthly stipend for internet/phone expenses.
  • Comprehensive Health & Wellness Benefits: Better than your average startup healthcare benefits. With five options to choose from, of which are fully subsidized by HiddenLayer, we offer a variety of options to fit each person's needs. We also offer vision, dental, and 401k offerings.
  • Flexible Time Off: Enjoy unlimited and flexible time off for all salaried employees, in addition to 15 paid company holidays.
  • Commitment to Learning and Development: We support personal growth and education through a dedicated L&D fund that can be used for training, conferences, certifications and industry events.
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: We are committed to building a diverse team with individuals from various backgrounds, experiences, abilities, and perspectives, and we are proud to be an equal opportunity employer.
