Summary
This position is located in the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department, Naval Station Mayport, Florida. The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of duties to maintain the grounds around MWR facilities to ensure safety and cleanliness for patrons and create aesthetically pleasing grounds.

Tractor operators at this level typically operate farm-type tractors and towed or attached equipment to maintain grounds and road medians and perform farming functions. They frequently operate towed or attached equipment from the seat of the tractor through hydraulic or mechanical controls. Examples of equipment operated at this level are mowers, aerators, plows, harrows, chippers, sprayers, disks, post hole diggers, front-end loading devices, movable dozer blades, and backhoes. The equipment may be powered by direct drive or a power takeoff. Perform operator maintenance on tractors and equipment. Tractor operators at this level work on level or rolling terrain in such areas as open fields, parks, orchards, lawns, and along roadways. Work typically requires tractor operators to manipulate both tractor and equipment controls at the same time.
Mows various fields using gas mowers, rotary mower and back blade. Moves and spreads dirt and clay using front loader and hand tools. Drags and prepares fields for various sporting events. Spreads fertilizer and grass seed. Checks irrigation system and may make minor repairs to system.
Edges walkways, patios and flower beds in and around MWR facilities. Loads, carries and spreads mulch in flower beds and in other areas as directed.
May assist ball field maintenance staff by infield grooming on the artificial turf field. Preparing athletic fields for sporting events such as: softball, baseball, football and soccer, to include marking fields, setting goals and bases according to regulations. May assist golf maintenance staff with golf course maintenance duties as needed. Prepares field areas for special events as directed by supervisor.Assist other facility maintenance personnel in accomplishing other tasks as assigned by supervisor.

  • Must meet Federal Employment suitability requirements and successful completion of background investigation. Background investigations are conducted using fingerprint identification and completion of background inquiry forms.

Qualifications

Specialized experience directly related to the duties described above. Qualifying experience must have been equivalent to the next lower level in the normal line of progression.
Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
  • Ability to adjust and operate a gas and diesel tractor and specialized equipment and to be able to manipulate both tractor and hydraulic controlled equipment simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of equipment and correct attachment methods, their power requirements, braking and turning capacities, power ratios and operating speeds.
  • Ability to perform minor maintenance to equipment, i.e., oils and grease.
  • Ability to recognize changes in turf conditions.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
