Position Description: The API Engineer supports the technical implementation of the Scheduling Event Bus and all external system connections, interface control documentation, and Application Programming Interface (API) onboarding processes.
Minimum/General Experience: 3 years of experience in API engineering and enterprise integration
Minimum Education: Bachelor's Degree in computer science, software engineering, information technology, or related field
Essential Skills/Qualifications:
  • Excellent experience designing and implementing event-driven architectures using AWS MSK (Kafka), AWS Kinesis, and equivalent enterprise messaging platforms including event schema design and message contract management
  • Excellent ability to design API integration patterns for healthcare scheduling systems
  • Excellent experience implementing API security controls including OAuth 2.0, identity-based access controls, role-based authorization, encryption in transit and at rest, and audit logging
  • Excellent ability to design API consumer onboarding frameworks including intake procedures, technical integration standards, interface control documentation (ICD), and production-readiness criteria
  • Excellent experience with API gateway configuration
  • Above average knowledge of Istio service mesh API traffic management (e.g., virtual services, destination rules, traffic routing, mTLS enforcement on EKS)
  • Above average experience with fault-tolerant messaging architecture (e.g., automated failover, message durability, replay capability, and dead-letter queue management)
  • Working knowledge of multi-region API routing strategies including DNS-based failover and health-check-driven traffic management
  • Experience supporting a federal agency
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Tasks/activities include, but are not limited to:
  • Supports technical implementation of the Scheduling Event Bus
  • Delivers a scalable, secure, and highly available event-driven integration framework
  • Designs and implements standardized, version-controlled event schemas and message contracts for all Scheduling Event Bus producers and consumers ensuring backward compatibility
  • Implements enterprise security requirements for all API integrations including encryption, identity-based access controls, role-based authorization, and comprehensive audit logging per VA Risk Management Framework (RMF) requirements
  • Develops and maintains the Scheduling Event Bus onboarding framework including eligibility criteria, technical integration standards, step-by-step guides, reference architecture, and sample code
  • Delivers and continuously maintains Scheduling Event Bus Onboarding Documentation
  • Manages all external system connections and interface control documentation
  • Maintains the Platform Dependency List API section with points of contact, escalation procedures, and operational expectations
  • Supports the Architecture Package with API integration diagrams, interface design patterns, and system interaction documentation
  • Implements monitoring and alerting for all API integrations including event flow visibility, throughput, latency, failures, and subscriber health
  • Supports multi-region API routing strategy including failover activation procedures and Recovery Time Objectives (RTO)/Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) definitions for the Multi-Region Enablement Plan

Compensation & Benefits: The annual projected pay range for this position is $90,633 - $107,951 with consideration being given to various factors including but not limited to qualifications, experience, job responsibilities, and geographic location.
