Remote Equity Compensation information

What is remote equity compensation?

Remote equity compensation jobs are roles that focus on designing, managing, and administering equity-based pay programs—such as stock options, restricted stock units (RSUs), or employee stock purchase plans—for employees and executives, while allowing employees to work from anywhere. These professionals ensure compliance with regulations, educate staff about their equity benefits, and help companies attract and retain talent through ownership incentives. Remote positions in this field can be found at technology firms, startups, or larger corporations with distributed teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote equity compensation specialist?

To thrive as a Remote Equity Compensation Specialist, you need a strong understanding of equity plans, financial analysis, and relevant laws, often supported by a bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, or a related field. Expertise in equity management platforms (like Shareworks or Carta), proficiency with Excel, and knowledge of regulatory compliance (such as SEC and IRS guidelines) are typically required. Attention to detail, clear communication, and the ability to work independently are standout soft skills for this remote role. These skills ensure accurate administration of equity programs, regulatory compliance, and effective support for both employees and organizational stakeholders.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in remote equity compensation roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in remote equity compensation roles often encounter challenges such as navigating complex global compliance issues, managing communication across different time zones, and ensuring accurate data management with limited in-person collaboration. To address these, it’s important to stay updated on international regulations, leverage collaboration tools for clear and timely communication, and utilize secure equity management software to maintain data integrity. Building strong virtual relationships with HR, legal, and finance teams also helps streamline processes and resolve issues efficiently.

Job description

Topo provides fractional embedded accounting and finance support to venture-backed companies. Topo's customers look to us as early-stage company experts focused on helping their companies succeed.

Topo Advisors is a modern advisory firm built to help founders, operators, and investors navigate the financial and strategic complexities of building companies. We combine deep expertise in accounting, finance, and business strategy with a genuine commitment to our clients' success. As we continue to scale, we are launching a dedicated Tax Practice - and we are looking for an exceptional leader to build it from the ground up.

This position can be remote based in the United States. The company is headquartered and based in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The Opportunity

This is a rare chance to build something meaningful. As Director of Tax you will create and lead Topo Advisors' tax practice - helping to define the service model, recruiting and developing the team, and serving as the firm's senior tax advisor.

What You Will Do

Practice Leadership

  • Design, launch, and lead Topo Advisors' tax advisory practice
  • Develop the service offering, fee structure, and go-to-market strategy for tax services
  • Build and mentor a team of tax professionals as the practice grows
  • Partner closely with the broader Topo Advisors team to deliver integrated, holistic advisory services to early-stage companies

Client Advisory

  • Serve as the primary tax advisor to a book of clients including preparation and review of tax returns
  • Provide strategic tax planning guidance on M&A transactions, entity structure, equity compensation, and capital events
  • Lead engagements around federal and state income tax, pass-through entities, R&D credits, and international tax matters
  • Build trusted, long-term relationships with clients - advising not just on tax, but on the broader business implications

Firm Contribution

  • Collaborate with Topo Advisors' accounting and finance teams on cross-functional client matters
  • Contribute to firm-wide business development and brand-building efforts
  • Stay ahead of regulatory changes and proactively communicate implications to clients and colleagues
What We Are Looking For

Experience & Expertise

  • CPA required; advanced degree (MSA, MST, JD/LLM) strongly preferred
  • 8+ years of tax experience, with a meaningful portion in public accounting (Nationally recognized regional firm preferred)
  • Deep expertise with C-Corporations required
  • Experience advising venture-backed or private equity-backed companies is a strong plus
  • Familiarity with equity compensation structures (ISOs, NSOs, 83(b) elections, carried interest)

Leadership & Character

  • A genuine desire to build - you are energized by the idea of creating a practice, not just managing an existing one
  • Excellent communicator who can translate complex tax concepts for non-technical founders and executives
  • Client-first mindset with a reputation for responsiveness, integrity, and sound judgment
  • Collaborative by nature - you thrive in a team environment and want to help the whole firm succeed
  • Entrepreneurial spirit with high standards and a drive for excellence
Compensation & Benefits

Topo Advisors offers a competitive compensation package commensurate with experience, including base salary, performance-based bonus tied to practice growth, and equity participation in the firm. Full benefits package includes health, dental, and vision coverage, generous PTO, and professional development support.

Our Values:TRUST

Our team operates in a high-trust role with customers. We look for people who exhibit uncompromising integrity, empathy, attention to detail, and the ability to exceed expectations.

OWNERSHIP

CURIOSITY

Our customers look to us for guidance on industry standards, best practices, and thought leadership. We're seeking voracious learners and curious people who are passionate about providing strategic insights to the companies we serve.

Topo Advisors is an equal opportunity employer, and we value diversity at our company. We don't discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.

Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship now or in the future.

Employment Type: FULL_TIME
