Emergency Department Facility Coder

Position Summary

The Emergency Department Facility Coder is responsible for reviewing and analyzing emergency department medical records to accurately assign diagnosis, procedure, and facility coding in accordance with ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, and regulatory guidelines. This role supports accurate reimbursement, charge capture, compliance, and data integrity while ensuring adherence to client-specific coding and billing requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review emergency department medical records and accurately assign ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes, CPT/HCPCS procedure codes, and applicable modifiers.
  • Assign facility Evaluation and Management (E/M) levels in accordance with client-specific emergency department leveling guidelines and facility charging methodologies, including utilization of the ACEP E/M tool.
  • Analyze clinical documentation from physicians, nursing staff, ancillary departments, and diagnostic services to ensure complete and accurate code assignment and charge capture.
  • Apply official coding guidelines, CMS regulations, National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI) edits, and payer-specific requirements.
  • Review procedural services, injections, and infusions to ensure accurate coding and billing when applicable.
  • Identify documentation gaps or deficiencies and communicate coding clarification needs through established channels.
  • Maintain compliance with Medicare, Medicaid, commercial payer, and organizational coding policies and procedures.
  • Participate in coding audits, quality assurance reviews, educational initiatives, and process improvement activities.
  • Stay informed on coding updates, reimbursement changes, and regulatory requirements impacting emergency department facility coding.
  • Collaborate with coding leadership, auditors, and client stakeholders to resolve coding-related questions and ensure coding accuracy.

Preferred Certifications:

  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
  • Certified Emergency Department Coder (CEDC) preferred but not required.

This is a Contract position based out of Phoenix, AZ.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $28.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
