Position Overview

Engineering is fundamental to the Landmark value proposition; accordingly,ย Director of Engineering and Designย is a key role within the Landmark leadership team, collaborating with all areas of the business.

Theย Director of Engineering and Designย is responsible for developing and leading a high-performing and cohesive Engineering and Design team aligned with Landmark's strategic direction and culture of innovation, efficiency, quality and safety. This role includes working closely with external and internal clients to develop solutions that ensure success.

The ideal candidate will possess outstanding leadership, management, communication and technical competencies, and will serve as a strategic leader, technical advisor, and client-facing representative. A strong foundation in Civil, Structural and Geotechnical Engineering is required.

Key Responsibilities

Organizational Leadership

  • Provide leadership and direction for the US and Canadian Engineering and Design departments, ensuring alignment with company goals and objectives.
  • Foster collaboration across cross-functional teams, including Operations, Construction, and Business Development, to deliver integrated solutions.
  • Develop engineering and design teams that are scalable and high-performing - anchored by a culture of safety and quality.
  • Partner with HR to design and maintain long-term sustainable career progression pathways for engineering and design personnel.
  • Promote a culture of innovation and continuous improvement across engineering and design functions.
  • Develop and manage departmental budgets, staffing plans, and resource allocation to support organizational growth.
  • Provide regular updates and reports on departmental performance, risks, and opportunities to executive leadership.

Project Leadership & Technical Oversight

  • Oversee the planning, design, permitting, and execution of design/build structural, foundation and mechanical engineering projects to ensure constructability, quality, cost, and schedule objectives.
  • Direct technical functions of large municipal service tank rehabilitation projects, including retrofit, inspection, and repair programs, standards, and procedures.
  • Support contract negotiations, project controls, and risk management activities.
  • Lead and manage remote/digital design and drafting centers across the U.S. and Canada, ensuring cross-border project delivery and regulatory alignment.
  • Provide technical counsel and solutions to project teams, clients, and stakeholders on engineering challenges.
  • Present project status, risks, and milestones to stakeholders to ensure alignment with objectives.

ย Process Optimization & Innovation

  • Drive innovation by adopting emerging engineering technologies, materials, and design practices to maintain a competitive advantage.
  • Streamline engineering and design processes by optimizing data flow, integrating digital tools, and leading technology development initiatives to improve efficiency, accuracy, and collaboration.
  • Develop, implement, and optimize standard work processes and best practices, including tracking and reporting of project-level metrics.

ย Compliance, Safety & Quality Assurance

  • Ensure compliance with government regulations, industry codes, and company standards (AWWA, IBC, ASCE, ACI, AISC) while overseeing quality assurance and control across all engineering outputs.
  • Ensure adherence to health, safety, and environmental (HSE) standards in all engineering and design activities.

Qualifications

Education, Certification & Licenses

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, or a related field required. Master's degree in engineering, business, or related discipline preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license strongly preferred

Experience

  • 10-20 years of progressive experience in Civil Engineering design and project leadership.
  • Demonstrated experience in design, development, and permitting of civil projects.
  • Proven track record in managing multidisciplinary teams in an EPC or design-build environment.
  • Experience working with U.S. and Canadian regulatory environments is an asset.

  • Strong knowledge of civil and structural design standards, codes, and specifications (AWWA D107 & D100, IBC, ASCE, ACI, AISC).
  • Ability to develop and implement departmental strategies, budgets, and resource plans.
