How you will impact the organization...
Reporting to the Director, Infrastructure Operations, the Ops Engineer III role is part of a team supporting both cloud-based and on-premises compute infrastructure running both UNIX/Linux and Windows operating systems. This specific role is highly critical to business continuity and will initially focus heavily on stabilizing, documenting, and supporting critical legacy systems that underpin platform stability and revenue generation. In addition to responding to alerts and participating in the change management process, and other tasks as assigned by management, the role is responsible for using, extending, and enhancing legacy deployment systems and modern IaC pipelines to support existing and new deployments. This engineer will independently identify areas for improvement and refactor older systems into established deployment frameworks. Knowledge of cloud-based resources, tooling, and best practices for resiliency, high availability, automatic scaling, large scale observability, and IaC tooling is required, and the role will support existing and new deployments of applications and infrastructure throughout the enterprise. This includes refactoring and developing new modules within the established tooling and deployment frameworks, as well as independently identifying areas for improvement, efficiency, and cost management across the technology stacks used by the enterprise. Strong documentation skills are strictly required to capture institutional knowledge, create runbooks, and mentor team members across the technology stacks. This position will be a key member of the DevOps team, and is expected to partner closely with Engineering peers to support deployments of both new projects and upgrades or enhancements to existing platforms.

  • Engage in direct shadowing to validate, expand, and create new documentation and runbooks for critical legacy on-premise environments to ensure operational continuity.
  • Support and maintain critical legacy systems including Grails-based web application stacks, other Java-based platforms, email and nameserver infrastructure, and complex virtualization clusters and storage arrays like Gluster volumes.
  • Develop, implement, and refactor new modules, pipelines, and tooling within established IaC and automation standards to deploy changes to current applications and support new platforms.
  • Monitor on-premises and cloud-based infrastructure, as well as update and maintain monitors, metrics, and alerting systems.
  • Monitor ticket queues, provide timely updates, resolve trouble tickets, and respond to diagnostic and troubleshooting requests in Slack channels. Participate in diagnosing and resolving hardware, operating system, application, and cloud infrastructure issues.
  • Initiate efforts to review and ensure existing platforms are performing resiliently, efficiently, and are cost-effective.
  • Ensure systems follow established security policies and support audit processes. Create tickets and participate in deployments following Change Management procedures.
  • Partner with other teams across the technology group and lead the Infrastructure Operations efforts to implement, document, monitor, and maintain new platforms and projects.
  • Provide mentorship and leadership to the team as well as participating in diagnosing and resolving hardware, operating system, application, and cloud infrastructure issues across all environment
  • Research, propose, develop and implement solutions to improve and upgrade both on-premises and cloud-based resources, infrastructure, and systems.
  • Create, update and maintain documentation on new developments, as well as refactor and review existing documentation for troubleshooting, and Methods of Procedure for deployments.
  • Participate in on-call rotations based on subject matter expertise.

What you will bring to the table...
  • 6+ years hands-on UNIX/Linux system administration experience in a distributed enterprise environment.
  • 4+ years experience designing and implementing infrastructure as code within AWS ecosphere using Terraform.
  • Proven experience independently troubleshooting and supporting complex, legacy on-premise production environments and custom application stacks
  • Expert level proficiency in at least one scripting (Bash, Perl, etc) and one programming language. (Python, Go, Ruby, etc). (Code samples and/or GitHub links to prior work desirable)
  • Mastery in DevOps discipline and processes supporting Continuous Delivery Tools such as CodePipeline, Jenkins, Git, Vagrant, Consul, JFrog, etc.
  • Experience with migrating and educating teams to newer SDLC concepts is a plus.
  • Mastery of system virtualization in a highly available, clustered environment, and strong familiarity with the container ecosystem.
  • Mastery in config automation tool sets such as AWS Config and/or SSM, Puppet, Ansible, Chef, etc - Includes solid knowledge of concepts and practices surrounding such solutions.
  • Proficient with Jira, Confluence, and git toolset
  • Hands-on experience with Agile/Scrum & Waterfall process environments
  • Consistently exhibits a personal accountability to outcomes to all team members, peers, and stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to respond quickly in a fast-paced environment
  • Able to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously in order to meet deadlines
  • A security clearance or the ability to obtain a security clearance is required.
