We are currently seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our growing Solid Rocket Motor Engineering Team. The successful candidate for this role has a strong understanding of thermal analysis principles, with expertise in some of the tools common in industry. As a Thermal Engineer you will conduct detailed thermal analysis of solid rocket motor components. You will collaborate closely with cross-disciplinary teams, interface with customers, and drive technical excellence.
** This is a full-time position with a 9/80 schedule. This position can be remote or at our Huntsville, AL or Hampton, AR facility.

  • Applies engineering techniques to design, install, modify, analyze, repair and test tools, engines, machines, and other mechanically functioning equipment.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and computer-generated reports.
  • Confers with engineers and other personnel to implement operating procedures, resolve system malfunctions, and provide technical information.
  • Researches and analyzes customer design proposals, specifications, manuals, and other data to evaluate the feasibility, cost, and maintenance requirements of designs or applications.
  • Specifies system components or directs modification of products to ensure conformance with engineering design and performance specifications.
  • Investigates equipment failures and difficulties to diagnose faulty operation, and to make recommendations to maintenance crew.

      Additional Responsibilities:

      • Perform detailed thermal analysis of solid rocket motor components.
      • Size internal insulation, external thermal protection systems, and structural insulators.
      • Validate models with test data; develop predictive ablation and erosion models.
      • Define sub-scale tests for characterizing material properties of insulators and ablators.
      • Evaluate and recommend ablative materials and thermal protection system solutions for applications in solid rocket motors
      • Create reports and presentations documenting analysis and other supporting work.
      • Present to peers and customers in design reviews.

      • Must be able to remain in a stationary position at a desk and/or computer for extended periods of time.
      • Requires regular movement throughout GD-OTS facilities.
      • May need to stand for long periods of time.
      • Work primarily in a climate-controlled environment with minimal safety/health hazard potential.
      • Work may require employee to work inside and outside with exposure to changing climate and/or operate machinery.

      Up to 25% travel likely.
      $100,300-$135,700
      The salary range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum for salary for this position. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, internal equity, and relevant education or training.       Hired applicant may be eligible to participate in the Companys Gain Sharing Program.
