What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote ad hoc analyst, and why are they important?

To excel as a Remote Ad Hoc Analyst, you need strong analytical skills, data interpretation abilities, and typically a bachelor’s degree in a related field such as business, statistics, or computer science. Proficiency in data analysis tools like Excel, SQL, Tableau, or Power BI, as well as familiarity with remote collaboration platforms, is essential. Excellent time management, self-motivation, and clear written and verbal communication are vital soft skills for independent and effective remote work. These skills and qualifications enable precise, timely insights and seamless collaboration, which are crucial for supporting data-driven decisions in a flexible, remote environment.

What is a remote ad hoc job?

Remote Ad Hoc jobs refer to temporary, as-needed work assignments that can be performed from any location, typically online. These roles are not regular or ongoing but are instead offered on a project-by-project or task-by-task basis. Common examples include freelance work, consulting, technical support, or administrative tasks that are handled remotely. Remote Ad Hoc jobs provide flexibility for both employers and workers, allowing people to work when opportunities arise without a long-term commitment. This type of work is ideal for those seeking flexible hours or supplementary income.

How do team members typically communicate and collaborate in a remote ad hoc role where schedules and projects may be irregular?

In a remote ad hoc position, communication and collaboration are often managed through digital tools such as Slack, Zoom, and project management platforms like Trello or Asana. Since tasks may arise unpredictably, team members are expected to be responsive and proactive in checking for updates or requests. Clear documentation and asynchronous communication are crucial to keep everyone aligned, especially when schedules differ. Building strong relationships with team leads and maintaining regular check-ins can help ensure that projects run smoothly, even in a flexible and dynamic work environment.

Job description

Senior DevOps Engineer

Job Number: 915

This is a remote position.

Ad Hoc is a technology company that empowers organizations to deliver scalable, impactful digital services. Using modern, agile methods, our team creates products that meet people’s needs and transform their experience of government.

Work on things that matter

Our collaborations have shaped some of the defining moments in public-sector service delivery. We’ve helped build products that connect Veterans to tailored services, help millions access affordable health care, and support important programs like Head Start. As we work with agencies to deliver critical services, we’re also changing how the government approaches technology.

Built for a remote life

Our culture, communications, and tools are built for remote work, enabling us to bring together top talent nationwide. At Ad Hoc, remote life empowers our teams to design work environments that fit their lives and that foster flexibility and collaboration to achieve positive outcomes for our customers.

Committed to high expectations and a welcoming culture

Ad Hoc values acceptance, accountability, and humility. We aren’t heroes. We learn from our mistakes and improve the process for the next time. We build small, inclusive teams to collaborate closely with our partners to solve the right problems and deliver software that works.

The Federal Civilian business unit supports many customers spanning the federal, commercial, and nonprofit space. Our customers include NASA, the General Services Administration, Office of Personnel Management, the Library of Congress, Health & Human Services, and the FDIC. We partner with these agencies to build new capabilities, deliver products, establish data as a strategic asset for informed decision-making, modernize legacy systems, and build the digital service infrastructure necessary to scale their mission impact.

Primary Responsibilities

As a Senior DevOps Engineer, you will serve as a senior individual contributor responsible for designing, building, and improving the infrastructure, automation, and delivery systems that support mission critical applications. You will operate with minimal oversight while helping shape technical strategy, mentoring teammates, and driving engineering best practices across the organization.

In this role, you will collaborate closely with software engineers, architects, security teams, and government stakeholders to build secure, scalable, and reliable cloud infrastructure that accelerates software delivery. You will influence long-term engineering direction while ensuring projects meet scope, schedule, and delivery objectives.

Primary expectations include:

  • Collaborate across engineering teams to standardize, simplify, and improve DevOps tools, platforms, and services.
  • Mentor engineers and promote DevOps best practices across the organization.
  • Lead small initiatives, technical workstreams, or temporary project teams as needed.
  • Present architecture designs, infrastructure diagrams, and technical recommendations to clients, stakeholders, and engineering teams.
  • Design cloud infrastructure and CI/CD pipelines with consideration for scalability, security, reliability, performance, and cost optimization.
  • Develop reusable infrastructure modules, libraries, and automation packages to improve engineering efficiency.
  • Build and maintain cloud infrastructure that enables secure, scalable application deployments while improving the overall developer experience.
  • Design, implement, and optimize CI/CD pipelines to improve deployment speed, consistency, and software quality.
  • Integrate automated quality gates, security scanning, vulnerability management, and static code analysis into delivery pipelines.
  • Build and maintain automated deployment pipelines using tools such as Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or CircleCI.
  • Partner with government customers and application development teams to ensure infrastructure and deployments meet security, availability, performance, and SLA requirements.
  • Participate in technical interviews and help evaluate engineering candidates.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and 8+ years of software engineering, DevOps, or cloud infrastructure experience.
  • Expert-level experience with Terraform and Docker.
  • Strong experience designing and managing cloud infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
  • Deep understanding of DevOps principles, including Linux administration, software installation, virtualization, containerization, networking, and automation.
  • Experience designing and supporting modern CI/CD pipelines in cloud environments.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills across infrastructure, deployment pipelines, and cloud platforms.

Work Authorization & Clearance

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future employer sponsorship.
  • Must be able to successfully obtain and maintain a Public Trust security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with PostgreSQL and Ansible.
  • Experience with AWS cloud services and cloud-native architectures.
  • Experience supporting applications in regulated or high-security environments.
  • Prior government contracting experience.
  • Experience working in Agile or SAFe development environments.
