GENERAL FUNCTION

TheDirector of Site Reliability Engineering (SRE)will lead the reliability, scalability, and operational excellence of the Newline platform. This role combines people leadership, technical depth, and cross-functional influence to ensure that our platform delivers highly available, secure, and resilient financial services at scale.

You will lead a team of SRE engineers responsible for production operations, platform observability, incident management, reliability engineering, and automation. This leader will partner closely with engineering, product, risk, and infrastructure teams to embed reliability into every stage of the software development lifecycle and operate within the bank's risk and compliance frameworks.

The Director will own key reliability outcomes-including availability, performance, scalability, and operational maturity-while fostering a culture of ownership, continuous improvement, and engineering excellence.

As a people leader, you will develop talent, drive organizational clarity, and build a high-performing SRE function aligned to Newline's strategic priorities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Leadership & Talent Development

    • Lead, coach, and develop a team of SRE engineers and leaders, fostering a culture of accountability, learning, and continuous improvement

    • Drive hiring strategies to attract top SRE and platform engineering talent

    • Provide continuous feedback, performance management, and career development planning

    • Build an inclusive, high-trust environment that enables teams to perform at their best

    Reliability Engineering & Operations

    • Define and execute the SRE strategy for Newline, including service level objectives (SLOs), error budgets, and reliability standards

    • Ensure high availability, resilience, and performance of critical platform services

    • Lead incident management practices including on-call models, escalation, and blameless postmortems

    • Drive root cause analysis and systemic improvements to eliminate recurring issues

    • Establish best-in-class observability across logs, metrics, and distributed tracing

    Platform & Automation

    • Champion automation-first operations, reducing toil and improving system efficiency

    • Partner with engineering teams to improve system design for reliability, scalability, and operability

    • Advance infrastructure-as-code, CI/CD, and release engineering practices to enable safe, predictable deployments

    • Optimize cloud and platform architecture for scale, cost efficiency, and resilience

    Cross-Functional Collaboration

    • Partner with Product, Engineering, Risk, Security, and Infrastructure teams to align on priorities and execution

    • Influence platform design decisions to ensure operational excellence and regulatory compliance

    • Remove organizational and technical impediments to enable teams to deliver effectively

    Risk & Compliance

    • Operate within Fifth Third's risk framework, ensuring reliability practices align with regulatory expectations

    • Identify, assess, manage, and communicate risks related to platform availability and operations

    • Drive audit readiness and operational controls for production systems

    Continuous Improvement

    • Establish and monitor key reliability metrics (availability, latency, error rates, MTTR, etc.)

    • Identify opportunities for process improvement and operational maturity

    • Promote a culture of learning through retrospectives, metrics, and experimentation

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Direct management of SRE engineers and potentially other managers

  • Responsibilities include performance management, coaching, compensation decisions, succession planning, and employee recognition

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Typically, will have at least 6-10 years of combined people leadership and hands-on experience in their particular craft.
  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in Computer Science/Information Systems or equivalent combination of education and experiences.
    • Proven experience building and leading SRE or production engineering teams incloud-native, distributed systems environments

    • Strong expertise in:

    • Reliability engineering (SLOs, SLIs, error budgets)

    • Incident management and production operations

    • Observability (monitoring, logging, tracing)

    • Cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure)

    • Infrastructure as Code and CI/CD practices

    • Experience operatingmission-critical, customer-facing platforms at scale,ideally in fintech, payments, or regulated industries

    • Deep understandingof resilient system design, distributed systems, and fault tolerance

    • Strong communication and leadership presence, with the ability to influence across technical and business stakeholders
