Job Summary

The Teaching Assistant (TA) is responsible for ensuring that all unaccompanied children UC (Unaccompanied Children) receive educational assessments and a structured education per the Office of Refugees Resettlement (ORR). The teaching assistant will be responsible for maintaining a positive and appropriate educational environment that meets the intellectual and emotional needs of all children.

Essential Functions:

  1. Provide educational services based on the Individual Academic Development, literacy level, and linguistic ability of each unaccompanied child per lesson plans and or established program guidelines.
  2. Assist in the implementation of lesson plans. Organize, prepare, create, plan and inventory materials for daily instruction. Develop lesson plans based on facilitated Units provided every two weeks.
  3. Supervise youth and set appropriate behavior limits in accordance with the youth's individual treatment and behavior plan and ORR standards.
  4. Promote a positive, safe, and inclusive climate of learning and excellence where students can enhance their developmental growth.
  5. Create a safe and inclusive classroom environment of respect and rapport to ensure a positive learning experience for youth with diverse backgrounds.
  6. Ensure the educational services adhere to the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) policies and procedures, federal, state and company legal guidelines and internal policies.

Qualifications and Requirements

Education/Work Experience:

Level: High school diploma or a GED

  1. 1 year of experience in a classroom, community service and/or an education setting.
  2. 1 year of experience in relevant field.
  3. 1 year of experience in teaching capacity, knowledge in curriculum development and lesson planning - preferred.
  4. Classroom teaching experience in an accredited early childhood facility / school - preferred.
  5. Must be bilingual (English/Spanish).

Equivalent Work Experience:

  1. 2 years Teaching Assistant experience in youth educational classroom setting.

Working Conditions/Physical Effort

Work is performed mostly in an office setting. Some overnight travel; public speaking, evening, and weekend work are requirements of the position. Regular computer work is also required. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand; walk; sit; finger, handle, or feel objects, or controls; reach; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, or crouch; talk and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to twenty-five 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
