CLASS DESCRIPTION

The position is non-benefited and part-time (average up to 10-15 hours per week). Hours may vary slightly, but typical hours are Tuesday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. or 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. or 2:30 p.m.
What is the role?
Under direct or general supervision, the Recreation Leader II (Nutrition Program Assistant) holds responsibility for the intake of catered foods, follows safe food handling protocols, distributes food based on serving guidelines as provided, provides direction to kitchen volunteers, and operates simple food service support equipment in a safe and effective manner including food preparation, washing and sanitizing of equipment, storage and refrigeration of food, and any other equipment as part of the daily routine. Daily reporting including reconciliation of collected funds and completion of required program paperwork.
The Recreation Leader II (Nutrition Program Assistant) receives direct or general supervision from assigned Recreation Coordinator and/or supervisory or management personnel. Exercises lead, technical, and functional direction and provide training to other staff and volunteers.
This is an entry-level class in the Recreation Department. Positions in this class typically have basic work-related experience.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (DUTIES)
Essential responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Typical Duties:
  • Provides direction to kitchen volunteers in the Senior Nutrition program.
  • Provides feedback regarding program goals and recommends new and innovative program ideas.
  • Assists the public with questions and problems in person, on the phone and by email.
  • Opens, closes, secures and provides onsite supervision of facility and activities of users; conducts safety checks.
  • Maintains a safe, positive environment.
  • Attends mandatory pre-service and in-service training and meetings.
  • Administers first aid as required; handles emergency or extraordinary situations by notifying the proper authority or responder.
  • Reports incidents/accidents.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of food safety practice.
  • Keeps records of food temperatures, volunteer hours and meal count reports.
  • Completes administrative tasks including billing and invoicing, computer input and the maintenance and submission of records, files and other data.
  • Assists in preparing promotional materials including flyers, programs, brochures, newsletters and press releases.

QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
  • Principles and practices of record keeping.
  • Principles and practices of computer programs.
  • Principles and practices of basic supervision and training methods and techniques.
  • Principles and practices of standard safety precautions.
  • Methods of program planning and evaluation.
  • Operational characteristics of the assigned recreation program.
  • English usage, vocabulary, spelling and punctuation.
  • Customer service techniques.

Ability To:
  • Work independently under minimal supervision.
  • Schedule, train, and lead the work of others.
  • Problem solve conflicts and disputes.
  • Assist or provide direction in the operations of assigned recreation programs.

This position is non-benefited.
In accordance with California state law, you are entitled to five (5) paid sick leave days per year. These days are eligible for use following your 90th day of employment with the City.
