As of May 29, 2026, the average hourly pay for ran optimization in the United States is $59.65, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $43.27 and $73.56 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a RAN Optimization Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a RAN Optimization Engineer, you need strong knowledge of radio access network (RAN) technologies, cellular communications, and typically a degree in telecommunications or electrical engineering. Proficiency in tools such as TEMS, Actix, and network management systems, as well as relevant certifications like CCNA or 5G-related credentials, is often required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for identifying network issues and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure optimal network performance, efficient troubleshooting, and high-quality service for mobile network users.

What are some of the most common challenges faced by professionals in RAN Optimization, and how can they be addressed?

One of the most common challenges in RAN Optimization is balancing network performance with resource constraints, as optimizers must enhance coverage and capacity without causing interference. Additionally, adapting to rapid technological changes, such as 5G rollouts, requires continuous learning and flexibility. Effective collaboration with cross-functional teams, including RF engineers and network planners, is essential to implement optimization strategies that align with overall business goals. Staying updated on the latest tools and best practices, as well as proactively analyzing network data, can help professionals address these challenges successfully.

What is RAN Optimization?

RAN Optimization refers to the process of improving the performance and efficiency of a Radio Access Network (RAN), which is a crucial part of mobile communication systems. It involves analyzing network data, identifying issues such as coverage gaps, dropped calls, or slow data speeds, and implementing solutions to enhance user experience and network capacity. RAN Optimizers use specialized tools to monitor network performance, adjust configurations, and recommend upgrades. This role is essential for maintaining high-quality wireless services as network demands grow and technologies evolve.

What is the difference between Ran Optimization vs Network Optimization?

AspectRan OptimizationNetwork Optimization
FocusOptimizing radio access network parameters for better coverage and performanceImproving overall network efficiency, including core and access networks
CredentialsTelecom engineering certifications, LTE/5G knowledgeTelecom engineering certifications, network architecture expertise
Work EnvironmentCell sites, radio network equipment, field and lab settingsNetwork operations centers, data analysis, planning offices
Industry UsageMobile carriers, telecom service providersMobile carriers, telecom infrastructure companies

While both roles involve optimizing network performance, Ran Optimization specifically targets radio access network parameters to enhance coverage and user experience. Network Optimization has a broader scope, focusing on overall network efficiency, including both radio and core network components. Professionals often work together but specialize in different areas of telecom network performance improvement.

Job description

NVIDIA has been transforming computer graphics, PC gaming, and accelerated computing for more than 25 years. It's a unique legacy of innovation that's fueled by great technology-and amazing people. Today, we're tapping into the unlimited potential of AI to define the next era of computing. An era in which our GPU acts as the brains of computers, robots, and self-driving cars that can understand the world. Doing what's never been done before takes vision, innovation, and the world's best talent. As an NVIDIAN, you'll be immersed in a diverse, supportive environment where everyone is inspired to do their best work. Come join the team and see how you can make a lasting impact on the world.

Telecom networks are becoming AInative, cloudnative, and softwaredefined. Our Telecom team is building a GPUaccelerated AIRAN platform that transforms how radios and basebands are designed and deployed across 5G, 5GAdvanced, and 6G. In the role of Lead SoC Product Architect for Telecom AI RAN (RU/DU), you define SoC and platform architecture for radio and distributed unit products. You develop NVIDIA's AI-RAN roadmap. You work directly with top operators and NEPs to bring software-defined baseband to production at scale.

What you'll be doing:

  • Define the SoC product family and roadmap concerning Radio Access Networks in telecommunications. Partition responsibilities for CPU, GPU, and accelerators. Set power and cost targets. Specify scalability from coordinated RU/DU appliances to cloud-hosted O-DU.

  • Perform detailed workload and usecase analysis pertaining to RU and DU (FR1/FR2, MIMO layers, bandwidth, carrier aggregation, CoMP, mMIMO), and map these requirements into SoC features, memory hierarchies, accelerators, and interconnect.

  • Drive competitive analysis versus traditional baseband ASICs and alternative vRAN / ORAN solutions, including performance, perf/W, silicon cost, flexibility, and upgradeability; use these insights to refine SoC and system direction.

  • Collect and synthesize customer and ecosystem requirements from operators, NEPs, and software partners, and feed them into SoC, board, and software roadmaps with clear, prioritized product requirements.

  • Collaborate with NVIDIA's RAN software, AI, and cloudnative engineering teams to ensure that the SoC architecture, reference platforms, and SDKs support efficient implementation of AInative RAN applications and rapid adoption of new 3GPP/ORAN releases.

  • Present deeply technical content to customers, partners, and internal leadership, clearly explaining architectural tradeoffs, performance results, and roadmap proposals for RU and DU products.

What we need to see:

  • MS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field, or equivalent experience.

  • 15+ years of experience in wireless RAN/baseband architecture or SoC product definition, with significant time focused on 4G/5G L1/L2 and/or ORAN / vRAN systems.

  • Proven track record defining SoC or platform architectures for highperformance communications or signalprocessing products, including hardware/software partitioning, accelerator strategy, and memory / I/O requirements.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of 3GPP RAN standards (4G/5G, NR, NR-Advanced) and O-RAN split architectures, including the functions of radio and distributed units, fronthaul, timing, and synchronization. Understanding of how these affect compute, latency, and bandwidth needs of radio and distributed units.

  • Strong knowledge of L1/PHY algorithms (OFDM, MIMO, beamforming, channel estimation, LDPC/FEC). Understand how they run on central processors, graphics processors, and dedicated accelerators. Practical experience with one commercial-grade 4G/5G PHY or MAC implementation required.

Ways to stand out from the crowd:

  • Direct involvement in architecting GPU or acceleratorbased RAN or signalprocessing systems, or in bringing a major vRAN / ORAN product from concept to commercial deployment.

  • Experience defining or implementing AInative RAN use cases (e.g., AIassisted scheduling, channel prediction, traffic forecasting, anomaly detection, or energy optimization) and understanding their impact on RU/DU compute and memory.

  • Handson experience with ORAN and 3GPP standardization activities, ORAN WG contributions, or multivendor interoperability programs.

  • Prior customerfacing role conducting competitive analysis, designins, or technical workshops with Tier1 operators, NEPs, or cloud providers.
