Position Summary: 
Synergy is seeking a Sr. Database Administrator to support the United States Coast Guard (USCG) at the Aviation Logistics Center (ALC)—Information Systems Division (ISD). The Sr. Database Administrator will be responsible for managing the full lifecycle of enterprise databases that support logistics, maintenance, financial, and operational applications. The Sr. DBA will oversee database design, implementation, tuning, security, and compliance while supporting Agile and DevSecOps pipelines in a high-availability, mission-critical environment. 

Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Administer, configure, and maintain enterprise relational databases including Oracle, Ingres, and Microsoft SQL Server, ensuring performance, availability, and data integrity. 
  • Lead the design and implementation of logical and physical database models, including data dictionaries, ERDs, schema designs, and indexing strategies to optimize performance. 
  • Perform database performance tuning, query optimization, partitioning, and resource utilization analysis to support high-volume transactions and analytics workloads. 
  • Define and enforce database standards, security policies, and operating procedures aligned with DHS 4300A, STIGs, and NIST 800-53 requirements. 
  • Implement database security controls, access roles, encryption protocols, and patch management in support of ATO compliance and cybersecurity mandates. 
  • Integrate databases with DevSecOps toolchains using Kubernetes, Jira, Bitbucket, and Confluence to support Agile development and version-controlled environments. 
  • Lead or contribute to data migration, legacy system transformation, and database refactoring initiatives as part of enterprise modernization. 
  • Work closely with developers, business analysts, cybersecurity professionals, and systems engineers to ensure database solutions meet system and mission requirements. 
  • Monitor system usage, conduct capacity planning, and ensure continuity of operations with backup, recovery, and disaster recovery procedures. 
  • Support configuration management and version control of database environments across development, test, staging, and production tiers. 
  • Research and recommend emerging data technologies and database solutions, including support for cloud-readiness, NoSQL models, or hybrid architectures where appropriate. 
  • Document all configuration changes, policies, procedures, and database architecture diagrams to ensure audit-readiness and knowledge continuity. 
  • All other duties as assigned by management. 
Skills/Qualifications: 
  • Expertise in administering and tuning Oracle, Ingres, and Microsoft SQL Server databases in enterprise or DoD/federal environments. 
  • Proficient in writing complex SQL queries, stored procedures, triggers, functions, and views. 
  • Strong understanding of relational and non-relational data models, data normalization, and schema optimization. 
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies, DevSecOps pipelines, CI/CD integration, and version control using Git-based tools (Bitbucket preferred). 
  • Proven ability to perform vulnerability remediation based on Tenable or similar scan tools and ensure STIG-compliant configurations. 
  • Solid knowledge of data protection techniques, RBAC, encryption at rest/in transit, and role-based access policies.
Education/Experience Requirements: 
  • Bachelor’s or Associate's degree in Computer Science, Math, Information Technology, Engineering, or related field. Five (5) years of directly relevant experience may substitute for two (2) years of formal education. 
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in database administration work, such as Oracle relational database, Ingres relational database, and Microsoft SQL Server. 
  • Minimum of five (5) years of performing security remediation to systems with vulnerabilities based on security scans. 
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience with Kubernetes, Jira, Confluence, and Bitbucket. 
  • Experience supporting federal government systems, particularly within DHS or DoD environments, is strongly preferred. 
Clearance: 
  • U.S. citizenship required 
  • Must have or be eligible to obtain a Position of Public Trust or DoD Secret Clearance. 
Certification Requirement 
  • CompTIA Security+ 
  • Additional certifications (Network+, AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, Microsoft Azure Fundamentals, ITIL Foundation, TOGAF, or other similar certifications) are a plus. 

Target Salary Range

Compensation for roles at Synergy is determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the requirements of the role; level of experience; education and certifications; the individual’s combination of knowledge, skills, and abilities; as well as alignment with market data, federal and state laws, and other business and contract considerations. The estimated pay range for this position is: $70,000 – $115,000. The disclosed range has not been adjusted for the applicable geographic differential associated with the location at which the position may be filled. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case and represent just one component of Synergy’s total compensation package for employees.
