Job description

About the Role:

The New York Times is looking for an experienced fact checker responsible for ensuring NYT games and other related content is factually accurate and solvable. You will be responsible for fact checking and researching puzzles and related copy for digital and print publication for New York Times Games. In addition to ensuring assigned work is accurate, they are experienced enough in solving our puzzles that they can catch issues with the solution or other gameplay. Responsibilities may include reviewing notes from other fact checkers or testers, and working on existing New York Times puzzles or a new beta game.

This is a hybrid role based in our New York City office.

Responsibilities:

  • Check factual assertions in assigned puzzle copy - including clues, questions, directions, categories, titles and themes.
  • Conduct accurate research to gather and verify facts in puzzles and related materials.
  • Ensure that the solution of assigned puzzles are correct and that there are no alternate solutions.
  • Make judgments on puzzle feedback from other fact checkers and testers.
  • Communicate feedback to stakeholders.
  • Assist development of fact checking standards for puzzles and games.
  • Perform related work as assigned.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • You will report to the Executive Editorial Director.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience as a researcher or fact checker for a publishing company, news organization, library or academic institution.
  • Professional experience conducting advanced research across diverse primary and secondary sources, including government and legal databases, historical archives, academic institutions, and public media repositories.
  • Proficient in managing editorial data and communications using advanced spreadsheet functions, memos, and collaborative platforms like Google Docs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Comfort with reaching out directly to recognized authorities in the process of conducting research to assist reporters
