They coordinate with authors, editors, designers, and marketing teams to ensure that projects are completed on time and within budget. Publishing Managers also develop strategies for acquiring new content, managing copyright issues, and maximizing the commercial success of publications. Their role often involves staying updated on industry trends and adapting to new technologies in publishing.

What does a publishing manager do?

A publishing manager takes care of all publications for a company or client. In this job, you often act as the primary contact between the media and a publication. Your specific job duties may include supervising and creating training materials for publishing staff, planning and implementing marketing campaigns, and staying up to date on market trends. You also review and edit print material, approve all copy before publication, negotiate contracts or licensing agreements, and participate in reviews or other promotional activities related to the project. In this role, you may work under a publishing director. This is not an entry-level position, so you should have several years of experience in publishing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a publishing manager?

To thrive as a Publishing Manager, you need strong project management abilities, editorial expertise, and often a degree in publishing, communications, or a related field. • Support SEO and generative search visibility through strong page structure, relevant content, FAQs, metadata, internal linking, and authoritative resources.
  • Create and optimize content that supports awareness, engagement, lead generation, and conversion throughout the customer journey.

  • 5+ years of experience in digital content, social media, content marketing, digital marketing, or external communications; B2B experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of HubSpot Marketing Hub and Content Hub, including landing pages, forms, email, campaign tools, content management, reporting, and optimization.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, interviewing, and creative storytelling skills, with a portfolio demonstrating the ability to make technical or complex topics engaging and easy to understand.
  • High degree of curiosity and a genuine interest in understanding customers, industries, operations, products, and emerging market trends.
  • Self-starter who takes ownership, brings forward original ideas, and moves work from concept to completion with limited direction.
