Understanding these differences helps job seekers identify the right role based on their skills and career goals.

Are proofreaders still in demand?

Proofreaders are still in demand, especially in publishing, media, and digital content industries, as accurate editing remains essential. The role often requires strong language skills and familiarity with editing tools, with opportunities available for remote work and freelance projects.

How can I become a proofreader?

To become a proofreader, you should develop strong language and grammar skills, often through a high school diploma or higher education. Gaining experience with editing tools and obtaining certifications such as the Certified Proofreader credential can improve job prospects; many proofreaders work freelance or for publishing companies with flexible schedules.

How do I get work as a proofreader?

To get work as a proofreader, build strong language and editing skills, often through a relevant degree or certification, and create a portfolio of sample work. Many proofreaders find opportunities through freelance platforms, job boards, or by networking with publishing or editing companies. Familiarity with editing tools like Microsoft Word or Adobe Acrobat can also improve job prospects.

What qualifications do I need to be a proofreader?

To be a proofreader, strong language skills, excellent attention to detail, and proficiency in grammar, punctuation, and style are essential. A bachelor's degree in English, journalism, or a related field is often preferred, and familiarity with editing tools like Microsoft Word or Adobe Acrobat can be beneficial.

Job Type: Full-Time / Part-Time

Reports To: Kitchen Manager / Head Chef

Job Summary

We're looking for a skilled and reliable Pizza Maker to join our kitchen team. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience hand-stretching pizza dough to order, building consistent, high-quality pizzas, and working efficiently in a fast-paced environment while maintaining our food quality and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Hand-stretch and shape pizza dough balls into consistent rounds using proper technique (no rolling pins unless specified by house style)

  • Maintain proper dough temperature and hydration awareness to prevent tearing or over-proofing during stretching

  • Portion dough accurately using a scale to ensure consistent pizza sizes

  • Top pizzas according to standardized recipes and portion guidelines

  • Operate pizza ovens (deck, conveyor, or wood-fired, depending on location) and monitor bake times/temperatures

  • Maintain a clean, organized prep and cook station in compliance with health codes

  • Rotate and manage dough proofing schedules (bulk fermentation, balling, cold/room temp proofing)

  • Communicate with kitchen and front-of-house staff to manage order flow during rushes

  • Restock and prep ingredients (sauces, cheeses, toppings) as needed

  • Follow all food safety, sanitation, and allergen handling protocols

Required Qualifications

  • Prior experience as a pizza maker, pizzaiolo, or similar kitchen role preferred

  • Demonstrated ability to hand-stretch dough consistently under time pressure

  • Understanding of dough handling gluten development, proofing stages, and how temperature/humidity affect workability

  • Ability to work standing for extended periods and lift up to 2550 lbs

  • Comfortable working in a hot, fast-paced kitchen environment

  • Food handler's certification (or willingness to obtain one)

  • Strong teamwork and communication skills

  • Flexible availability, including evenings/weekends/holidays

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with high-hydration or Neapolitan-style dough

  • Wood-fired or deck oven experience

  • Formal culinary training or apprenticeship

Physical Requirements

  • Extended standing, reaching, and repetitive hand/wrist motion (stretching, tossing)

  • Exposure to high heat near ovens

  • Lifting dough tubs, flour bags, and supply boxes
