Job description

SUMMARY

Mortenson is currently seeking an experienced Assistant Project Manager, Self-Perform in our Data Center Solutions Group to support the planning, coordination, and execution of self-perform scopes from preconstruction through project completion.

This role partners closely with the Project Manager, Field Leadership, and craft teams to drive productivity, cost performance, and quality of self-perform work. You will play a key role in aligning estimating, operations, and field execution while leading and mentoring project team members. Strong communication skills are essential, as you will collaborate across project teams, subcontractors, and internal stakeholders in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Your ability to remain flexible, proactive, and detail-oriented while maintaining a high level of integrity is critical to success in this role.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Self-Perform Scope Leadership

  • Support planning, coordination, and execution of self-perform scopes of work, ensuring alignment between estimate, schedule, and field operations
  • Partner with Field Leadership (Superintendents and craft teams) to drive productivity, safety, and quality performance
  • Monitor and track self-perform production rates, labor performance, and cost trends
  • Identify risks and opportunities within self-perform scopes and proactively implement solutions

Preconstruction & Planning

  • Collaborate with Preconstruction on self-perform estimates, logistics, and execution strategies
  • Support development and alignment of project schedules and sequencing for self-perform work
  • Assist in constructability reviews with a focus on means, methods, and field execution

Financial & Cost Management

  • Perform cost control and financial tracking specific to self-perform scopes
  • Review and manage contracts, budgets, and cost forecasts related to self-perform work
  • Analyze cost performance and support forecasting, reporting, and variance management

Procurement & Buyout

  • Lead and support procurement of materials, equipment, and self-perform resources
  • Assist in buyout and management of trade partners that interface with self-perform work
  • Evaluate supplier and subcontractor performance and recommend strategies for improvement

Execution & Coordination

  • Coordinate self-perform scopes with subcontractors and other project stakeholders
  • Facilitate coordination meetings to ensure alignment of self-perform and subcontracted work
  • Support implementation of quality plans and ensure adherence to design and performance criteria
  • Provide direction and support to ensure safe, timely, and efficient project delivery

Leadership & Team Development

  • Provide direction, mentorship, and coaching to Project Engineers, Field Engineers, and early career team members
  • Support career development, training, and performance management within the project team
  • Act as a liaison between project management, field leadership, and self-perform teams

Additional Responsibilities

  • Perform on-site Project Manager duties for small or discrete self-perform scopes
  • Build strong working relationships across diverse teams and organizational levels
  • Lead by example, reinforcing Mortenson’s safety culture and core values

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction, Civil, Architectural, Mechanical, and/or Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 5+ years of construction experience, with exposure to self-perform scopes or field operations preferred
  • Proven ability to support delivery of complex, field-driven scopes of work
  • Strong understanding of construction means and methods, labor productivity, and field execution strategies
  • Demonstrated experience in cost tracking, forecasting, and schedule coordination
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Working knowledge of construction contracts and industry best practices
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office, project management tools, and web-based applications
  • Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills
  • Current driver’s license

The base pay range for this role is $102,000 - $137,700.(Actual range is higher for the following office locations: Denver, CO and Chicago, IL – 5%, Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR – 10%, Washington, D.C. – 12.5%.)

Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience, with consideration given to internal equity.
