Programme Manager information

What is a Programme Manager?

A Programme Manager is a professional responsible for overseeing multiple related projects within an organization, ensuring they align with business objectives and deliver value. They coordinate project managers, manage resources, and communicate with stakeholders to ensure successful program delivery. Unlike project managers who focus on individual projects, programme managers maintain a big-picture view, managing interdependencies and risks across projects. Their work is essential in achieving strategic goals and driving organizational change.

What is the difference between Programme Manager vs Project Manager?

AspectProgramme ManagerProject Manager
Primary FocusOversees multiple related projects to achieve strategic objectivesManages individual projects to deliver specific outputs
ScopeBroader, long-term initiativesSpecific, short-term deliverables
ResponsibilitiesAligns projects with organizational goals, manages interdependenciesPlans, executes, and closes projects within scope, time, and budget
CredentialsOften PMP or PgMP, relevant experience in program managementPMP or similar project management certifications

While both roles require strong project management skills and certifications like PMP, a Programme Manager focuses on coordinating multiple related projects to achieve strategic business objectives, whereas a Project Manager concentrates on delivering specific project outputs within defined constraints.

How does a Programme Manager typically balance multiple projects and ensure effective communication among project teams?

A Programme Manager often oversees several related projects simultaneously, which requires strong organizational and communication skills. They manage interdependencies and allocate resources while regularly coordinating with project managers, stakeholders, and cross-functional teams to align goals and timelines. Effective Programme Managers establish regular check-ins, use collaborative tools, and create transparent reporting structures to keep everyone informed and address issues proactively. This approach helps prevent bottlenecks and ensures that programme objectives are met efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Programme Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Programme Manager, you need expertise in project management, strategic planning, and stakeholder coordination, often supported by a relevant degree and certifications like PMP or PRINCE2. Familiarity with project management tools such as Microsoft Project, Jira, or Asana and experience with budgeting and resource allocation systems are typically required. Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help Programme Managers navigate complex projects and motivate cross-functional teams. These competencies ensure programmes are delivered on time, within scope and budget, and aligned with organizational goals.

Job description

Shaping the future through innovation and discovery!

With a history spanning more than seven decades, Communications & Power Industries’ thousands of products have impacted people’s lives in numerous unseen ways every day. Our highly engineered products serve as the backbone of modern-day commercial and military communications systems, assist in diagnosing medical conditions, empower scientific discoveries and space exploration, and much more.

CPI is headquartered in Plano, Texas and is a global manufacturer of electronic components and subsystems. We have manufacturing locations in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia. With a heritage of technological excellence, our team serves customers in the communications, defense, medical, industrial, and scientific markets.

YOUR DAY TO DAY:

We are seeking a motivated and experienced Program Manager to lead the successful execution of customer-funded and internal development programs within a fast-paced aerospace and defense manufacturing environment.

This role is ideal for a hands-on program leader who enjoys working closely with customers, engineering, operations, and supply chain teams to deliver technically complex products on schedule, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.

As a Program Manager, you will be responsible for coordinating cross-functional teams, managing customer expectations, identifying and mitigating risks, and driving successful program execution from contract award through industrialization and delivery.

YOU WILL BE ACCOUNTABLE TO/FOR:

Program Leadership & Execution

  • Lead scope, schedule, budget and risk management for multiple projects from post sale to delivery/industrialization.
  • Ensure projects meet quality and regulatory requirements (e.g. ISO, ITAR, IEC, MIL-STD).
  • Drive proactive risk management and continuous improvement through lessons learned and process enhancements.

Customer and Stakeholder Management

  • Serve as primary interface for IRAD and customer driven programs, providing clear communication acting as the voice of the customer to senior leadership.
  • Prepare and present status reports and program reviews for internal and external audiences.
  • Foster strong relationships with assigned key accounts, ensuring consistent communication, alignment on technical and delivery expectations, and early identification of new business opportunities.

Cross Functional & Business Leadership

  • Work closely with Engineering, Operations, Supply Chain, Quality, and Finance to resolve execution challenges and achieve program milestones (design reviews, FAT, FAI, etc.)
  • Support proposal development, contract negotiations, change management, and development of SOWs and responses to RFP/RFQs.
  • Identify opportunities for follow-on business and contribute to long-term customer growth and satisfaction.

YOU ARE THE RIGHT PERSON FOR THIS JOB IF YOU HAVE/ARE:

    • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, science, business administration or equivalent demonstrated experience (PMP certification or equivalent project management training is considered an asset)
    • 5-10 years experience managing technical programs in manufacturing or other highly regulated technical environments.
    • Familiarity with RF systems, high voltage technologies or power electronics is desirable.
    • Demonstrated experience with Earned Value Management (EVM) principles and tools for cost and schedule performance tracking
    • Familiarity with government contracts and ability to interpret and comprehend contract language
    • Strong organizational and leadership skills with the ability to influence across departments in a multi-site, multi-cultural environment.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Proficient in MS Project, MS Office, and ERP systems.
    • Ability to travel as required with valid driver’s license and passport.
    • Must be able to meet CGP requirements.

      WHAT WE OFFER:

Whether you are a seasoned professional or just embarking on your career, CPI is an ideal place to expand your knowledge and expertise. We cultivate a healthy, dynamic, and team-oriented environment that empowers our employees to develop, create and deliver innovative, reliable technology solutions to power, connect, protect, and support a better tomorrow.

We offer our employees an attractive compensation package with competitive salaries and comprehensive benefits, including health and wellness programs, career development, generous retirement savings plan with company match and more!

      WHO WE ARE:

CPI is committed to providing equal employment opportunities for all current and prospective employees, as well as to promoting a culture of inclusion and respect for everyone. We celebrate the innovation that diversity creates in the work environment, and we recognize that each employee brings their own unique capabilities, experiences, and perspectives to the organization. It is this variety that adds value to our teams, as well as to our stakeholders. We welcome and encourage applicants to reach their full potential with us.
