Program Release Manager information

What is a program release manager?

Program Release Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the planning, coordination, and deployment of software releases or program updates within an organization. They ensure that all aspects of a release, from development and testing to deployment and documentation, are completed on time and according to quality standards. Program Release Managers work closely with cross-functional teams to minimize risks, resolve issues, and ensure a smooth release process. Their role is critical in maintaining the stability and reliability of software products while enabling new features and improvements.

How does a program release manager typically coordinate with development and QA teams during a product release cycle?

A Program Release Manager acts as a central point of communication between development, quality assurance (QA), and other cross-functional teams to ensure smooth and timely product releases. They facilitate regular meetings to track progress, address roadblocks, and synchronize release schedules. By managing dependencies and enforcing adherence to release processes, they help ensure that code is thoroughly tested and integrated before deployment. This role often requires balancing technical details with big-picture planning, making strong collaboration and organizational skills essential.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a program release manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Program Release Manager, you need strong project management skills, expertise in release planning, and a background in IT or software development, often supported by a relevant degree or certification such as PMP or ITIL. Familiarity with tools like Jira, Git, Jenkins, and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) systems is typically required. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills help you coordinate cross-functional teams and manage complex release schedules. These competencies are essential for ensuring timely, high-quality software releases and minimizing risk in fast-paced technical environments.

What is the difference between Program Release Manager vs Release Coordinator?

Job description

We are looking for a driven, diligent leader to join our Technical Program Management team for Compute Platform Software. You will work with engineering and product leaders on the planning and execution of programs to develop and publish software enabling new enterprise systems that are at the heart of cross-industry advancement of AI applications. Our work has made major impact in various fields, and is used across leading academic institutions, start-ups, and industry; including the world's largest Internet companies. We need passionate, hard-working, and creative people to help us reach our engineering goals.
This role is responsible for overseeing the end-to-end release management process - ensuring smooth, timely, and high-quality software releases from design through full production deployment at scale. You will coordinate release activities across multiple teams, aligning incremental breakthroughs with larger production release cycles to ensure consistency and predictability. In this position, you will partner closely with engineering, QA, product management, and operations teams to plan, track, and implement release objectives. You will collect requirements, define release priorities, and maintain detailed release calendars to coordinate multiple parallel efforts. You will develop and continuously improve release management processes - including scheduling, version control, deployment procedures, and post-release validation - to optimize delivery pipelines and reduce release risk. Additionally, you will collaborate with engineering management to refine workflows, streamline approvals, and drive continuous improvement in software delivery efficiency.
What you'll be doing:
  • Collaborate across product and engineering teams, spanning the entire stack, to ensure release readiness and successful delivery of enterprise software while being viewed as a leader across all Business Units
  • Manage software branching strategies, including feature, release, and hotfix branches, to ensure smooth integration, version control, and timely delivery of releases
  • Assess the release-readiness status, anticipate risk, and provide strategies to mitigate risk
  • Develop program schedules and KPIs to measure release health, predictability, and achievements and regularly communicate program status and key issues to senior leadership
  • Utilize coding skills to build or enhance automation scripts, dashboards, and tools that streamline release management and improve delivery efficiency
  • Work with Engineering and QA teams on test plans, execution, reviews, failure analysis and assessing overall quality and risk
  • Work with Customer Program Managers to track and resolve software issues incorporating technical feedback from CSPs and OEMs
  • Identify failures, lead retrospective analysis, and help to develop improvement action plans

What we need to see:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or similar field or equivalent experience
  • 10+ years of hands-on experience with software program / release management in tech or related fields
  • Thorough knowledge of software engineering and life cycle principles
  • Ability to think strategically and tactically and to build consensus to make programs successful
  • You should have strong solution focused skills, consistently successful implementing systematic solutions
  • Must have experience influencing decisions and leading teams in a dynamic environment
  • Enthusiastic, responsive and passionate about finding opportunities for process improvement
  • Excellent communications and technical presentation skills as well as being thorough and ability to multitask is important

Ways to stand out from the crowd:
  • Experience on boards and servers in the datacenter space or with productizing enterprise server systems coordinating activities between HW / SW organizations
  • Deep understanding of software engineering principles and enterprise system architecture
  • Skilled in modern programming languages and practical familiarity with efficiency tools and process automation
  • Experience with OSS profiling and vulnerability resolution applying tools like Black Duck or Palamida
  • Previous experience in QA is a plus, providing valuable insight into release validation and quality assurance processes
