What is a program manager?

Program managers are professionals responsible for overseeing multiple related projects within an organization, ensuring they align with strategic goals and deliver expected outcomes. They coordinate the efforts of project managers, manage resources, set priorities, and address risks and issues that arise across the program. Unlike project managers who focus on individual projects, program managers take a broader view, ensuring that all projects within a program work together effectively to achieve long-term business objectives.

What does a program manager do?

The job of a program manager is to plan, organize, and coordinate management programs or external programs for a business or institution. As a program manager, your duties vary depending on the type of organization for which you work, but many of the responsibilities for this role are similar or overlap. You typically supervise numerous associates and analysts who help prepare data and assessments about current programming and how it can be improved. You help to implement new programs for employees or customers and promote them through HR or outreach coordinators and marketing professionals. You also assess individual projects and how they interact with one another.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a program manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Program Manager, you need strong project management skills, strategic planning abilities, and a relevant degree, often supported by certifications like PMP or Agile. Familiarity with tools such as Microsoft Project, Jira, or Asana is essential for tracking progress and managing resources. Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help you motivate teams and navigate complex stakeholder environments. These competencies ensure that programs are delivered on time, within scope, and aligned with organizational goals.

What are some common challenges program managers face when coordinating cross-functional teams?

Program Managers often encounter challenges such as aligning priorities across diverse teams, managing conflicting stakeholder expectations, and ensuring clear communication among departments with different workflows. Navigating these challenges requires strong negotiation and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to build consensus and foster collaboration. Successful Program Managers proactively establish regular check-ins, promote transparency, and adapt strategies to keep projects on track and maintain team engagement.

What is the difference between Program Manager vs Project Coordinator?

Program managers typically earn a median annual salary of around $115,000, with salaries ranging from approximately $80,000 to over $150,000 depending on experience, industry, and location. In larger organizations or tech industries, salaries can be higher, especially for those with certifications like PMP or experience managing complex projects.

A program manager needs strong leadership and communication skills to coordinate multiple projects and teams effectively. Organizational and strategic planning abilities are essential for managing complex initiatives and aligning them with business goals. Department OverviewMotorola Solution's Video Division is defining the future of the security industry through innovative end-to-end-solutions. We're changing the landscape of the surveillance industry through advanced award-winning AI based surveillance systems. Artificial Intelligence is transforming the world and our team is advancing the field as it applies to the surveillance industry. We are proud to be industry leaders in video analytics with products like Appearance Search and Unusual Motion Detection along with our cloud service platform. You will have the opportunity to contribute to intelligent camera surveillance systems through cutting edge research and software engineering.
Job Description

We are looking for a Technical Program Manager (TPM) to join our Video Security & Access Control (VS&A) Engineering organization. This is a high-impact role where you will drive the execution of complex, cross-functional programs that define the future of physical security-from AI-powered cameras to cloud-based access management systems.

In this role, you will report directly to the Sr. Director of Software Engineering for our Avigilon Unity portfolio, serving as a strategic partner to engineering leadership and a primary driver of technical delivery.

The Role:

As a TPM, you are more than a project manager; you are a technical leader who understands the "how" as much as the "when." You will navigate the intersection of hardware, firmware, cloud software, and AI analytics. You will be responsible for orchestrating the entire product development lifecycle, ensuring that our roadmap is translated into high-quality, scalable solutions that protect people and property worldwide.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Program Lifecycle Management: Lead the end-to-end delivery of complex programs, managing dependencies across hardware, embedded software, cloud, and mobile teams.

  • Strategic Alignment: Work closely with the AVP of Engineering and Product Management to translate business strategy into actionable technical milestones and execution plans.

  • Risk Mitigation: Proactively identify technical bottlenecks, resource constraints, and cross-functional dependencies. Develop mitigation strategies to keep programs on track.

  • Technical Problem Solving: Dive deep into architectural discussions and technical hurdles. Use your engineering background to help teams make trade-offs between scope, schedule, and technical debt.

  • Stakeholder Communication: Provide transparent, data-driven updates to executive leadership. You will be the "single source of truth" for program health, budget, and timelines.

  • Process Excellence: Continuously improve the VS&A engineering execution model, implementing best practices for Agile, Waterfall, or Hybrid methodologies as needed.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Experience: 8+ years of experience in Technical Program Management or Engineering Leadership, specifically within a product development environment.

  • Domain Expertise: Proven track record in one or more of the following: Physical Security (VMS/ACS), IoT, Embedded Systems, Cloud Infrastructure (AWS/Azure), or AI/Video Analytics.

  • Strategic Thinking: Experience working directly with executive-level leadership (VP/AVP level) to align engineering output with business goals.

  • Execution Focus: Expert-level knowledge of SDLC and hardware development cycles. You know how to get things done in a fast-paced, global organization.

  • Communication: Exceptional ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and vice versa.

Target Base Salary Range: 120,000 CAD - 170,000 CAD
Consistent with Motorola Solutions values and applicable law, we provide the following information to promote pay transparency and equity. Pay within this range varies and depends on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The actual offer will be based on the individual candidate.
