What Is the Job of a Program Manager?

The job of a program manager is to plan, organize, and coordinate management programs or external programs for a business or institution. As a program manager, your duties vary depending on the type of organization for which you work, but many of the responsibilities for this role are similar or overlap. You typically supervise numerous associates and analysts who help prepare data and assessments about current programming and how it can be improved. You help to implement new programs for employees or customers and promote them through HR or outreach coordinators and marketing professionals. You also assess individual projects and how they interact with one another.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Program Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Program Manager, you need strong project management skills, strategic planning abilities, and a relevant degree, often supported by certifications like PMP or Agile. Familiarity with tools such as Microsoft Project, Jira, or Asana is essential for tracking progress and managing resources. Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help you motivate teams and navigate complex stakeholder environments. These competencies ensure that programs are delivered on time, within scope, and aligned with organizational goals.

What are some common challenges Program Managers face when coordinating cross-functional teams?

Program Managers often encounter challenges such as aligning priorities across diverse teams, managing conflicting stakeholder expectations, and ensuring clear communication among departments with different workflows. Navigating these challenges requires strong negotiation and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to build consensus and foster collaboration. Successful Program Managers proactively establish regular check-ins, promote transparency, and adapt strategies to keep projects on track and maintain team engagement.

What are program managers?

Program managers are professionals responsible for overseeing multiple related projects within an organization, ensuring they align with strategic goals and deliver expected outcomes. They coordinate the efforts of project managers, manage resources, set priorities, and address risks and issues that arise across the program. Unlike project managers who focus on individual projects, program managers take a broader view, ensuring that all projects within a program work together effectively to achieve long-term business objectives.

Job description

1-800-GOT-JUNK? is in the middle of a multi-year transformation to a Product Operating Model. This is not a theoretical shift—it is actively changing how we prioritize, build, and deliver value across the business.

Reporting to the Director of Program Management within our Strategy & Transformation team, this role sits at the centre of that change.

We are not looking for someone to manage timelines or coordinate updates. We are looking for a Program Manager who owns outcomes across complex, cross-functional work—someone who can drive clarity, force trade-offs, and ensure our most critical “Bets” deliver real business results.

You will operate as the connective tissue between strategy and execution, with accountability for ensuring that priorities translate into progress, and that progress translates into measurable value.

This role directly impacts our ability to scale new products, improve speed to market, and deliver value to our franchise partners.

What You Own

Program Outcome Ownership
You are accountable for ensuring that programs deliver against their intended outcomes—not just that work gets done. You translate strategy into executable plans, challenge misalignment, and ensure teams are focused on the highest-impact work.

Decision Clarity & Trade-offs
You drive clarity in environments with competing priorities. You surface trade-offs, push decisions to the right level, and ensure progress is not stalled by ambiguity or misalignment.

Dependency & Risk Management
You identify and actively manage cross-team dependencies that slow delivery. You don’t just track risk—you remove bottlenecks and escalate systemic issues early to maintain momentum.

Operating Model Discipline
You champion how we work. You establish and reinforce clear standards for planning, sequencing, and delivery across “Bet” teams—balancing consistency with the flexibility required for agile execution.

Cross-Functional Alignment
You work across Product, Technology, and Enablement teams (Readiness, GTM, Ops, L&D) to ensure delivery is synchronized with business readiness. You challenge gaps and ensure solutions land at the right time, with clear value.

Performance, Insight & Accountability
You own program visibility. You translate complex data (progress, risk, cost, outcomes) into clear insights that drive decisions at all levels—from functional teams to executive sponsors.

What This Role Requires

You are comfortable operating in ambiguity and are motivated by solving complex, messy problems. You influence without authority, hold leaders accountable, and are willing to challenge when needed to drive the right outcomes.

You bring:

  • 5–8+ years of Program Management experience in product-led or technology-enabled environments
  • Proven experience owning delivery across complex, cross-functional programs with real business impact
  • Strong understanding of Product Operating Models, OKRs, and outcome-based planning
  • Experience driving trade-offs and decisions at senior levels, not just facilitating discussions
  • Deep expertise in Lean and Agile, applied pragmatically to accelerate delivery
  • Strong business acumen, with the ability to connect delivery to customer and financial outcomes
  • Systems thinking—ability to see patterns, bottlenecks, and opportunities across teams
  • Comfort working with tools like Jira, Confluence, and AI-enabled tooling to drive visibility and scale
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to simplify complexity and drive alignment
Why This Role Matters

This is not a traditional Program Management role.

You will be working on the most critical initiatives in the business, in an environment that is actively evolving. Success in this role requires not just capability, but judgment, resilience, and a willingness to challenge how things have been done.

If you are looking for a role where you can operate at the intersection of strategy, product, and execution—and have a direct impact on how a business scales—this is it.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

Salary Range: $110,000 – $145,000 per annum
(The actual salary offered will be commensurate with education, experience, and internal equity.)
We offer a competitive Total Compensation Package designed to support your financial, personal, and professional well-being. This includes:

  • Participation in our Company Profit Sharing Program of up to 8% of base salary
  • Eligibility for a Sales Incentive/Bonus Program for revenue-generating roles, based on performance and role criteria
  • Comprehensive Extended Health and Dental Benefits
  • Generous Paid Time Off, including annual vacation and personal days
  • Hybrid Work Environment, offering flexibility to work both remotely and from our corporate offices
  • Professional Development Opportunities to support ongoing career growth
  • Access to Health and Wellness Programs, including gym facilities at our corporate head office
THE HIRING PROCESS
  • Pre-Screen – Let’s talk about your experience, goals & excitement for this role!
  • Interviews – Two or more interviews with different team members, including structured competency & scenario-based questions
  • Presentation/Assessment
  • References & Background Check
