What are professional services?

Professional services are specialized businesses that offer expert advice, skills, or support to organizations or individuals. These services typically include fields such as consulting, legal, accounting, IT, and engineering. Professionals in these roles use their expertise to help clients solve problems, improve efficiency, or comply with regulations. The work often involves project-based engagements, client interaction, and tailored solutions rather than selling physical products.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in professional services?

Excelling in Professional Services requires strong analytical abilities, client relationship management, and a relevant academic background, such as a degree in business, finance, or consulting. Familiarity with project management tools, CRM platforms, and industry-specific software is often necessary, along with certifications like PMP or Six Sigma. Outstanding communication, problem-solving, and adaptability are vital soft skills for building trust and managing diverse client needs. These competencies enable professionals to deliver effective solutions, maintain client satisfaction, and drive business growth in a competitive service environment.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in a professional services role, and how are they typically addressed?

In a Professional Services role, one common challenge is managing multiple client projects with varying deadlines and priorities. Professionals often need to balance delivering high-quality solutions while adapting to different client environments and expectations. To address these challenges, effective time management, clear communication, and proactive stakeholder engagement are essential. Many organizations provide training in project management methodologies and foster a collaborative team culture to help employees succeed in this fast-paced environment.

What is the difference between Professional Services vs Consulting?

AspectProfessional ServicesConsulting
Required CredentialsCertifications like PMP, CPA, or industry-specific licensesOften requires industry experience; certifications may be beneficial but not mandatory
Work EnvironmentClient sites, offices, or remote; project-basedAdvisory roles, project-based, often involving strategic planning
Employer & Industry UsageConsulting firms, professional service providers in finance, IT, legal, etc.Management consulting firms, independent consultants, corporate strategy teams

Professional Services typically involve delivering specialized expertise directly to clients, often requiring specific certifications and working in client environments. Consulting focuses on providing strategic advice and recommendations, often involving analysis and planning. While both roles are client-facing and project-based, Professional Services tend to be more execution-oriented, whereas Consulting emphasizes strategic guidance.

The Professional Services Consultant acts as a trusted advisor and delivery lead within Lucid's Professional Services organization, engaging directly with enterprise accounts to maximize their investment in the Lucid Visual Collaboration Suite. This individual sits at the intersection of business strategy and technical execution, translating complex, ambiguous enterprise challenges into clear, visual strategic roadmaps. On a day-to-day basis, they collaborate closely with enterprise buyers, IT stakeholders, and internal product teams to map out strategic processes, optimize software delivery lifecycles, drive organizational agility, and more. The business impact of this role is direct and measurable: accelerating product adoption, securing high renewals, and unlocking new revenue opportunities within strategic accounts.

Key Responsibilities
  • Partner with Fortune 500 stakeholders to design and execute customized consulting engagements that translate complex organizational outcomes into high-value visual outputs.
  • Guide enterprise clients through how to leverage Lucid to accomplish their transformation outcomes, developing Lucid solutions and enablement programs to achieve those results.
  • Facilitate executive-level workshops focused on large-scale digital transformations, AI / Process Transformation and corporate change management.
  • Analyze ambiguous business environments to uncover latent customer friction points and prescribe structured, visual solutions.
  • Extract field insights and systemic customer feedback to influence Lucid's core product roadmap and scale internal Professional Services methodologies.
  • Advocate for Lucid's Professional Services brand by translating successful client outcomes into public-facing case studies and presenting at industry events.
Requirements
  • 5+ years of experience in a highly consultative, customer-facing role (Professional Services, Management Consulting, or Enterprise SaaS Solutions).
  • Demonstrated understanding of artificial intelligence, process management, or enterprise architecture.
  • Foundational exposure to enterprise architecture concepts, cloud environments (AWS, Azure, or GCP), or infrastructure visualization.
  • Proven track record of managing and presenting to Director, VP, and C-suite enterprise stakeholders.
  • Experience transforming highly chaotic, ambiguous enterprise environments into structured project deliverables.
  • This position is hybrid, combining remote work with in-person collaboration at our South Jordan, UT office two days per week (Tuesday and Thursday).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in a technical, business, or related analytical field.
  • Prior experience in a direct engineering, R&D, or software development role before transitioning to consulting.
  • Technical certifications in cloud platforms (e.g., AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner), enterprise architecture frameworks (e.g., TOGAF), process management, or Project management.
  • Experience leading massive, global software rollouts of productivity, collaboration, or enterprise-grade SaaS platforms.
