What is a professional engineer?

Professional Engineers (PEs) are licensed engineers who have met the education, experience, and exam requirements established by their state or country. They are legally authorized to sign off on engineering projects, offer their services to the public, and take responsibility for the safety and integrity of engineering work. Becoming a PE typically involves earning an accredited engineering degree, passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, gaining relevant work experience, and passing the Professional Engineering (PE) exam. The PE license signifies a high standard of competence and ethics in the engineering profession.

What can professional engineers do?

Professional engineers design, develop, and evaluate systems, structures, and processes across various industries such as construction, manufacturing, and technology. They apply scientific and mathematical principles, often hold licensure, and are responsible for ensuring safety, compliance, and efficiency in their projects.

What is the difference between Professional Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectProfessional EngineerMechanical Engineer
CredentialsRequires PE license, degree, work experience, examRequires degree, possibly fundamentals exam, but not license
Work EnvironmentDesign, review, sign off on projects, often in consulting or engineering firmsDesign, analysis, manufacturing, and testing in various industries
Industry UsageLicensed in engineering projects, legal responsibilityCommonly employed in manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, and more

The main difference between a Professional Engineer and a Mechanical Engineer is that the PE is licensed and authorized to sign off on engineering projects, ensuring legal and safety standards are met. Mechanical Engineers typically hold the necessary education and experience but do not have licensing requirements unless they pursue PE licensure. Both roles work closely in engineering fields, but the PE designation signifies a higher level of responsibility and legal accountability.

What does a professional engineer do?

A professional engineer uses mathematics and science to create safe and efficient buildings, machines, and applications. Engineers typically specialize in a particular field, such as aerospace, mechanical, or structural engineering. Your job duties vary depending on your area of expertise and employer but may include creating plans, designing machinery, or building skyscrapers. This career often involves a combination of office and field work. Frequent travel is an additional job requirement for many professional engineering jobs. Long hours and overtime work are also expected to meet deadlines.

What are some common challenges professional engineers face when managing multiple projects simultaneously?

Professional Engineers often juggle several projects at once, which can present challenges in prioritizing tasks, coordinating with diverse teams, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. Effective time management and clear communication are essential to handle shifting deadlines and resource allocation. Collaborating closely with project managers, clients, and other engineers helps maintain project momentum and quality, while regular progress reviews ensure that no critical detail is overlooked.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a professional engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Professional Engineer, you need a solid grasp of engineering principles, problem-solving skills, and a degree in engineering, typically complemented by a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, MATLAB, or project management tools, along with ongoing continuing education, is often required. Strong communication, teamwork, and project management abilities help engineers deliver effective solutions and collaborate with diverse stakeholders. These skills and qualifications ensure engineers can design safe, efficient systems and maintain high professional standards in complex technical environments.

Role description:

We are seeking a talented and motivated Electrical Engineer to join our Ports and Marine team. In this role, you will contribute to the planning, design, coordination, and delivery of electrical systems for complex port, harbour, marine terminal, and waterfront infrastructure projects. You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to support safe, reliable, resilient, and sustainable marine infrastructure solutions that enable efficient port operations and support coastal communities, trade, and transportation networks.

The successful candidate will bring strong technical capability in the design and delivery of electrical systems for ports and marine environments, a collaborative mindset, and a passion for solving complex infrastructure and operational challenges. This role offers the opportunity to work across a range of projects, from feasibility studies and concept development through detailed design, procurement, construction support, commissioning, and operational improvements.

Role accountabilities:

As an Electrical Engineer in our Ports and Marine team, you will support the design and engineering of electrical systems for a wide range of port, harbour, marine terminal, ferry, container, bulk handling, and waterfront infrastructure projects. This includes medium and low voltage power distribution, shore power and vessel utility connections, lighting, grounding and bonding, backup power and UPS systems, communications, controls, and associated electrical infrastructure. You will contribute across concept, preliminary, and detailed design phases for berths, wharves, piers, terminals, yards, substations, service buildings, utility corridors, and related marine facilities, applying strong technical and analytical problem-solving skills to help deliver safe, reliable, efficient, and sustainable infrastructure solutions.

You will prepare and review technical reports, engineering calculations, design drawings, specifications, equipment layouts, cable routing, load studies, short-circuit and coordination studies, and other key project documents to ensure they meet project requirements, applicable codes and standards, client expectations, and operational needs. This work will require attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to manage priorities while delivering high-quality work within deadlines. You will also apply relevant ports, marine, and electrical engineering best practices, taking a proactive and solutions-oriented approach to identifying technical issues, constructability considerations, project risks, and opportunities for improvement, with a focus on achieving practical, value-driven outcomes for clients and port stakeholders.

Working closely with multidisciplinary teams, you will coordinate with civil, structural, geotechnical, coastal, mechanical, process, automation, environmental, and operations disciplines to support integrated project delivery. Success in this role will depend on your ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary and client-focused environment, as well as your effective written and verbal communication skills. You will also assist with coordination across clients, port authorities, terminal operators, vessel operators, contractors, utilities, regulatory bodies, and project partners, helping to maintain alignment, build strong working relationships, and support efficient project execution throughout the project lifecycle.

You will also support project delivery in line with scope, schedule, budget, quality, health and safety, sustainability, and resilience objectives. Depending on project needs, this may include participating in site visits, marine facility inspections, field investigations, condition assessments, construction support activities, commissioning support, and troubleshooting of electrical systems in operational port environments. You may also contribute to proposals, technical submissions, feasibility assessments, cost estimates, and project planning. The role calls for someone who is adaptable, proactive, and responsive to changing project and operational needs, while contributing to a culture of technical excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement across the team.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized university
  • Professional Engineer designation (P.Eng.) or eligibility for registration with the relevant provincial engineering association is preferred
  • Experience in the design and delivery of ports, marine, transportation, industrial, waterfront, or infrastructure projects
  • Demonstrated understanding of electrical systems related to ports and marine environments, such as medium and low voltage power distribution, shore power and vessel utility connections, grounding and bonding, backup power / UPS systems, lighting, communications, controls, conduit and cable routing, equipment layouts, electrical rooms, substations, and utility infrastructure
  • Familiarity with relevant industry standards, codes, and regulations applicable to ports, marine terminals, shore power systems, and electrical infrastructure
  • Experience preparing engineering calculations, technical specifications, reports, design drawings, and construction documentation
  • Proficiency with standard engineering software and design tools such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, Revit, ETAP, SKM, or other related platforms is considered an asset
  • Strong understanding of multidisciplinary project environments and integrated design delivery
  • Experience supporting projects through design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and operational support phases is an asset
  • Experience with site investigations, condition assessments, construction support, or commissioning activities in operational port, marine, industrial, or waterfront environments is considered an asset
