Description Do Great Things. Durham Technical Community College is hiring a Full-Time 9-month Instructor in the Biological Sciences Department. The Instructor is responsible for course preparation, delivery, grading, and records management.
The Instructor will work closely with the Discipline Chair and other discipline or cross-discipline faculty on matters related to and for the benefit of the department and its students. Examples of Duties Teach all courses, credit and non-credit, as assigned, for the full duration of scheduled instruction, including seated, online, and hybrid as needed at any of Durham Tech's instructional sites, especially at the main campus and the Orange County Campus (OCC). Knowledge of equitable teaching practices, particularly in the field of biology.
Be fully prepared with a syllabus and instructional plans for each class session in accordance with the stated objectives of the course. Enforce academic policy and procedures at all times, and comply with institutional rules and regulations. Maintain posted office and on-campus hours sufficient to fulfill all contracted duties and individual professional obligations, as well as to meet the needs of the department, division, and college.
Serve as educational advisor to students and participate in semester advising and registration activities for both assigned advisees and, as needed, individual students. Participate in discipline, departmental, divisional, and institutional meetings, committees, and other special appointments. Assist in the revision and development of course outlines, syllabi, curriculum plans, and other instructional documentation, and in the identification, development, preview, and acquisition of educational resources and supplies required to meet program objectives and improve instruction.
Maintain complete course and student records, reports, and forms. Attend training and other professional development opportunities on- or off-campus and stay current with developments in the field of instruction. Assume other necessary responsibilities and perform additional tasks as assigned by the chair, department dean, chief instructional officer, or president, in meeting the needs of the department, division, and college.
Assume responsibility for laboratory/classroom preparation, including maintenance and cleanup, and recommend, as necessary, appropriate laboratory supplies and equipment at all Durham Tech instructional sites. Minimum Qualifications A master's degree or a doctoral degree in Biology, or a related subject, with at least 18 graduate semester hours in biological sciences Work Experience: Two years of successful experience teaching science at a university or community college is preferred. Experience in teaching nonmajors biology, environmental biology, organismal biology, evolution, biodiversity, and/or ecology is preferred.
Supplemental Information Thorough understanding of and commitment to the mission and philosophy of the North Carolina Community College System. Demonstrated ability to use modern instructional technology (Microsoft Office, learning management systems, email, Internet, student information databases, and library research databases) and experience with Internet-based instruction. Competence in oral and written communication skills necessary for effective teaching.
Sensitivity to the needs and expectations of students, colleagues, and community groups. Ability to be organized, accurate, and punctual with paperwork and assigned tasks. Evidence of strong interpersonal skills, organizational skills, and effective oral and written communication/public relation skills.
Excellent problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines. Ability to think creatively and put ideas into action.
Ability to make presentations to small and large audiences. Ability to establish and maintain effective, civil, and respectful communication and interpersonal relations throughout the college and community. Personal integrity, honesty, and the ability to maintain confidentiality.
Familiarity with OSHA standards as they apply to educational environments. Good eye/hand dexterity. Normal Working Hours: A minimum of a 40-hour work week (including 18-21 contact hours per week for fall and spring semesters) as determined with the supervisor to allow the employee to fulfill the assigned duties and responsibilities, including occasional evening and weekend hours. This is a 9-month position.
