SUMMARY
The Product Safety Engineer is responsible for supporting product safety efforts across the full product lifecycle, including design, manufacturing, and post-market activities for Copeland's compression technologies and controls solutions.
The Product Safety Engineer participates in identifying and mitigating product safety risks and works cross-functionally with Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, Legal, and Compliance teams to embed safety into product design and execution. The Product Safety Engineer also drives continuity and follow through of product safety activities such as incident investigation, corrective actions, risk assessments, and continuous improvement of product safety processes.
The Product Safety Engineer supports the Product Safety Officer in executing product safety strategy and activities, while reporting directly to the Regulatory Compliance Manager.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
As a Product Safety Engineer, you will:
  • Support the Product Safety Officer and Product Safety Committee in executing Copeland's Global Product Safety Policy, ensuring alignment with global safety standards and internal requirements.
  • Participate in and help facilitate formal product safety design reviews for new product development and major product changes, ensuring safety risks are identified and mitigated early.
  • Conduct and support product safety risk assessments (e.g., hazard analysis, FMEA) to identify, assess, and discuss potential product safety hazards throughout the product lifecycle and across product lines for systems-level sales and software services
  • Investigate product safety incidents, including legal claims, lawsuits, field issues, and non-conformances, and lead root cause analyses and drive corrective and preventive actions to reduce recurrence and improve product safety performance.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to internal teams on product safety principles, standards, and best practices.
  • Partner with Legal and Compliance and Engineering to help ensure that products include appropriate warnings, instructions (usage, maintenance, and installation) and other safety communications.
  • Prepare reports and presentations relating to product safety incidents.
  • Review historical information and warranty records to identify and report potential product safety patterns.
  • Maintain product safety records and documentation, including risk assessments, investigation records, and Product Safety Committee meeting minutes, and support the development and continuous improvement of product safety policies and procedures.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, & SKILLS:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field, or an Associate degree with relevant HVACR experience.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to assess safety risks and implement effective mitigation strategies.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the capacity to convey complex technical information to diverse audiences.

PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, & SKILLS:
  • 3-5 years' experience participating in or leading Product Safety Committees or governance structures.
  • Deep knowledge of product safety frameworks applicable to HVACR Industry (UL 60335, UL 1995, ASHRAE standards, DOE energy regulations, EMC Directives, CE marking).
