Job Summary:

This position will support the PGM and fire test specialist. Primary focus will be identifying and developing strategic growth initiatives and expanding our utilization of the TTL. Responsible for assisting in the development and launching of new certification and testing programs for CSA Group.

Responsibilities:

Aid in consistency of providing technical leadership in the testing and certification of energy storage components area among all CSA certification offices and network members internationally. Aid in ensuring and documenting that technical staff has the appropriate qualifications and training to consistently provide certification work of high quality in a particular product/standard area (including lab). Mentor and provide leadership to less-experienced Test Engineers and Technician staff. Answer questions, help with problems, and oversee work for quality and guideline compliance. Responsible for the commissioning of CSA's Fire Testing Capabilities and ensuring that the equipment, testing procedures, and data acquisition processes meet all CSA quality and accreditation requirements. Responsible for the development of Operations processes to ensure that all safety and budget requirements have been met. Provides critical input and leadership along with hands on practical assistance in the development, expansion, and building of fire testing labs and partners globally including development, deployment and performance of testing. Participates in the development of national and/or international standards. International travel may be required

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Assumes responsibility for the assembly of calorimetry test apparatus, calibration, and training of operations staff. Once operational and routine testing begins, oversee the program and ensure all calibration and testing are performed according to appropriate test standards.
  • Provides technical direction and support to staff engaged in certification work. Resolves technical issues and provides an interpretation of technical requirements within the assigned area of responsibility. Reviews, assesses and audits staff engaged in certification work to ensure technical consistency across the organization and the network members.
  • Works with Technical Integrity and Operations Staff to develop technical requirements and programs for certification. Assists the Legal and Product Safety & Compliance teams resolve issues arising out of Product Incidents Reports (PIR). Develops interim certification requirements (ORDs) and prepares Notices, Informs and Technotes, and other documentation to support the certification process. Works with the Technical Integrity and Operations Managers to assess the technical competence of certification staff in the CSA offices, Network Members and subcontracted independent testing facilities within the assigned product/standards area.
  • Develops training materials and may deliver and/or arrange for training of technical staff in the assigned product / standard area under the direction of, and in support of, Operations and Technical Training. Delivers training and technical seminars to customers and Network Members engaged in certification work. Documents the training appropriately in employee training records. Supports the Senior Manager, Technical Training in the development and maintenance of the CSA Learning Management System.
  • Participates, under the Product Group Manager's and Technical Oversight Manager's direction, in Canadian, US, binational, trinational, and international standards development work. Proactively communicates to certification management and staff the new and revised requirements resulting from the standards development work and any implications the changes might have on current work processes and lab equipment requirements.
  • Performs technical and system audits of CSA offices, Network Members, and subcontracted independent testing facilities. Reviews laboratory qualification assessment documents.
  • Performs certification and testing work appropriate to their own certifications/qualifications and experience.
  • Provides support to the Client Service Centre staff by answering technical inquiries.
  • Acts as a Subject Matter Expert to support the development of innovative new programs to integrate new features or complex features in products. Assists and supports Commercial, Standards & Operations where required expertise and innovative solutions are created to address complex program requirements, such as multi-disciplinary technologies or products not addressed by currently published requirements.
  • Leads CSA Group's Technical Networks, which comprises key certifiers, certification specialists, technical oversight managers and technical oversight specialists. With a primary goal of advancing the technical knowledge and technical depth of CSA's certifiers globally, resulting in global technical consistency.
  • Provides answers promptly and fosters open technical discussions in CSA's internal Technical Forums that support Fire Testing standards and testing requirement.

Education and Experience:

  • Advanced University degree in a relevant discipline of Engineering, or equivalent
  • Minimum five years' experience in engineering or laboratory testing environment, preferably with a strong emphasis on fire safety/fire testing.
  • Previous experience and demonstrated ability to commission a lab is a plus.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, written and oral; presentation skills are essential.
  • Must understand the calibration and operation of instruments such as oxygen consumption calorimeters, lasers, thermocouples, pressure transducers, heat flux transducers, and load cells
  • Must understand working in with fire testing standards such as ASTM and NFPA standards
  • Strong leadership skills
