Job description

Overview

Theย Leadย Product Engineerย on the Horizon teamย is responsible forย driving the overall effectiveness, quality, and technical direction of product engineering execution across the platform. This role serves as a player-coach, combining hands-on development with ownership of how the team translates complex operational workflows into scalable, reliable, and production-ready systems.ย

Thisย role is accountable for ensuring consistency in system design, engineering standards, andย deliveryย quality across the team. Theย Lead Product Engineerย operatesย across multiple workstreams, guiding solution design, shaping architectural decisions, and ensuring alignment between product intent and technical execution.ย

Working closely with Product, Engineering leadership, and domain SMEs, this individual ensures that complex problem spaces are broken down effectively, solutions are designed with strong domain and operational awareness, and teams are executing with speed, clarity, andย high standardsย in a regulated, high-stakes environment.ย

Success in this role requires strong technical depth, excellent product judgment, and the ability to lead through influence and direct engagement,ย raising the bar for execution while enabling the team to move quickly from ambiguity to production.ย

This is a fully remote position that offers a competitive salary range of $170,000 to $220,000 USD, plus an annual bonus. You'll also receive our excellent benefits package, which includes medical coverage starting on day one and a company-matched 401(k). Compensation may vary based on experience, location, and other job-related factors.

Responsibilities

Team Leadership & Execution Oversightย

  • Provide day-to-day technical and product guidance to Product Engineers and Senior Product Engineersย ย
  • Ensure consistent, high-quality execution across multiple concurrent workstreamsย ย
  • Act as the primary escalation point for complex technical or product challengesย ย
  • Balance hands-on contribution with oversight to ensure delivery velocity and qualityย ย

End-to-End System Ownershipย

  • Oversee the design and delivery of complex, cross-cutting product capabilitiesย ย
  • Ensure solutions are cohesive across frontend, backend, and infrastructure layersย ย
  • Maintain accountability for system quality, reliability, scalability, and maintainability across the teamโ€™s outputsย ย

Product & Domain Translation at Scaleย

  • Ensure consistent andย accurateย translation of domain workflows into product capabilities across engineersย ย
  • Partner with SMEs and Product toย validateย that solutions reflect real-world operational complexity and constraintsย ย
  • Identifyย gaps, edge cases, and inconsistencies across implementations and drive alignmentย ย

Technical Leadership & Architectureย

  • Guide architectural direction across key areas of the platform in partnership with engineering leadershipย ย
  • Establish and enforce patterns, standards, and best practices across the teamย ย
  • Ensureย appropriate tradeoffsย between speed, scalability, and long-term systemย healthย ย

Operating Model & Ways of Workingย

  • Define and continuously improve how Product Engineering work is executed (e.g., scoping, breakdown, handoffs, iteration)ย ย
  • Ensure strong alignment between Product, Engineering, and SMEs throughout the development lifecycleย ย
  • Improve clarity in execution by driving better definition, estimation, and sequencing of workย ย

Cross-Functional Leadershipย

  • Serve as a key interface between Product, Engineering, and business stakeholdersย ย
  • Provide clear communication on technical decisions, tradeoffs, risks, and progressย ย
  • Help align stakeholders on priorities, scope, and execution strategyย ย

Hands-On Development & Technical Depthย

  • Contribute directly to critical areas of the codebase, particularly in complex or high-risk areasย ย
  • Set the standard for engineering quality, maintainability, and performance through direct contributionย ย
  • Support troubleshooting, debugging, and resolution of complex production issuesย ย

Mentorship & Team Developmentย

  • Actively mentor and develop Product Engineers and Senior Product Engineersย ย
  • Raise the bar on system design thinking, product judgment, and engineering qualityย ย
  • Helpย identifyย skill gaps and support growth across the teamย ย

Iteration & Continuous Improvementย

  • Drive continuous improvement across both product capabilities and engineering processesย ย
  • Identifyย opportunities to improve developer velocity, system reliability, and overall team effectivenessย ย
  • Ensure feedback loops (customer, SME, internal) are incorporated into ongoing developmentย ย

Qualifications
  • 4-6+ years of experience building and shipping high-quality production softwareย ย
  • Proven experience leading or guiding teams in complex, ambiguous environmentsย ย
  • Demonstrated ability toย operateย as both an individual contributor and team leaderย ย
  • Good judgment in ambiguous environments where the problem is not fully defined yet, where we need to go fromย zero to oneย
  • The ability to communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical teammatesย ย
  • A bias toward action: you thrive in an environment where you are learning quickly, shipping thoughtfully, and improving through iterationย
  • Strong experience with a modern frontend stack, including TypeScript, React, and/or Next.js, styling systems/libraries, and modern build tooling ย
  • Strong product instincts,ย great designย taste, and a clear sense for building products that feel natural and intuitive to end usersย ย
  • Experience with rapid prototyping and tools/workflows that enable fast iteration cyclesย ย
  • Experience building modern backend systems using Python, Go, Rust, or similar languages, including APIs, middleware, ORMs, authentication, authorization, and security-minded application designย ย
  • Experience building and shipping software on major cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azureย ย
  • Experience working in a modern software development environment and shipping quickly with high ownershipย ย
  • Comfort navigating and iteratively improving on shared CI/CD, Observability, Reporting, Analytics, and Data-heavy Systemsย ย

Preferred Experience:ย

  • Experience leading engineering efforts in regulated industries (fintech, mortgage, lending, etc.)ย ย
  • Experience building workflow-heavy systems or internal operational toolsย ย
  • Experience scaling teams, processes, and systems in a high-growth environmentย ย
  • Experience improving engineering velocity, system performance, and reliability at scaleย ย
  • Experience working closely with product and domain SMEs in complex environmentsย

A Note to Candidates:ย

You do not need prior fintech or finance experience to succeed in this role. Ifย youโ€™reย a strong engineer with product sense, good judgment, and excitement for learning a complex domain,ย weโ€™dย love to hear from you.ย If your backgroundย doesnโ€™tย line up perfectly with every bullet, but this role feels like the kind of work you want to do, please apply.
