What is a product development manager?

A Product Development Manager is a professional responsible for overseeing the process of creating new products or improving existing ones within a company. They coordinate cross-functional teams, manage timelines, and ensure that products meet market needs and business objectives. Their role often includes market research, product design, testing, and working closely with marketing, engineering, and sales teams to bring products to market successfully.

What does a product development manager do?

A product development manager helps a company design new goods and merchandise to increase sales and revenue. As a product development manager, you collaborate with market research and product marketing managers to form development and marketing strategy around new product ideas. You also work with teams in the product development and marketing departments to implement strategies and design new goods or services. You oversee quality assurance testing to ensure that the end user is satisfied with the products your company creates.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a product development manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Product Development Manager, you need expertise in project management, market analysis, and product lifecycle strategies, usually supported by a degree in business, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Agile methodologies, product management software (e.g., Jira, Trello), and certifications such as PMP or Scrum Master are highly beneficial. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help you motivate teams and navigate cross-functional collaboration. These competencies are crucial for driving innovation, meeting market demands, and ensuring successful product launches.

What are some common challenges a product development manager might face when balancing stakeholder expectations and project timelines?

Stakeholders, such as marketing, sales, and engineering teams, may have differing priorities or urgency, which can lead to conflicting demands. Effective communication, setting clear project milestones, and regularly updating all parties are essential strategies. Additionally, managing scope creep and ensuring alignment on product vision help prevent delays and maintain focus on deliverables.

Job description

Pattern Maker / Product Development Specialist

Bring Your Textile and Patternmaking Skills to Life

Are you passionate about pattern development, product design, and transforming complex shapes into functional, high-quality products?

Commercial Sewing is seeking a creative and detail-oriented Pattern Maker to help develop innovative marine and powersports cover systems used by leading manufacturers across North America.

This is a unique opportunity for someone with a background in Textile Design, Textile Engineering, Fashion Design, Technical Design, Product Development, or Patternmaking who wants to apply their skills in a hands-on product development environment.

From concept through production, you'll create patterns, develop prototypes, solve fit challenges, and collaborate with a team dedicated to designing products that protect some of the most recognized boats and powersports vehicles on the market.

If you love working with textiles, understanding how materials behave, and creating products that combine form and function, we'd love to meet you.

What You'll Do

  • Create and develop production-ready patterns for marine and powersports cover systems.
  • Translate product concepts into accurate, manufacturable patterns.
  • Build and evaluate prototypes for fit, function, performance, and appearance.
  • Analyze complex three-dimensional shapes and develop precision-fit solutions.
  • Work with a variety of technical fabrics, materials, and components.
  • Collaborate with engineering, product development, sewing, cutting, and production teams.
  • Conduct fit evaluations and implement pattern adjustments as needed.
  • Support new product development projects and model-year updates.
  • Improve product performance, manufacturability, and overall customer experience.
  • Maintain and revise pattern libraries and technical documentation.

What We're Looking For

Preferred Backgrounds

We encourage candidates with education or experience in:

  • Textile Design
  • Textile Engineering
  • Fashion Design
  • Technical Design
  • Product Development
  • Patternmaking
  • Apparel Manufacturing
  • Industrial Design
  • Upholstery Design

Qualifications

  • Experience creating patterns for sewn products, apparel, upholstery, marine products, or similar applications.
  • Strong understanding of textile materials, fabric behavior, fit, and construction methods.
  • Excellent problem-solving and spatial visualization skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a product development environment.
  • CAD and digital patternmaking experience is a plus.
  • Experience with marine, automotive, upholstery, performance, or industrial fabrics is highly desirable.

Why You'll Love This Role

Unlike many design positions, you'll see your work move from concept to finished product.

You'll Have the Opportunity To:

  • Design products used by leading OEM manufacturers across North America.
  • Work with innovative textile materials and technical fabrics.
  • Solve unique pattern and fit challenges every day.
  • Develop products that combine aesthetics, engineering, and functionality.
  • Collaborate with experienced professionals in design, manufacturing, and product development.
  • Make a direct impact on product quality, innovation, and customer satisfaction.

Why Commercial Sewing?

At Commercial Sewing, we believe great products start with talented people. We offer a collaborative, team-focused culture where creativity, innovation, and continuous learning are valued.

Many of our employees have built long-term careers here, staying with the company for 20, 30, and even 40+ years because they enjoy meaningful work, supportive teammates, and opportunities to grow.

Whether you're an experienced pattern maker or a recent graduate looking to apply your textile and design education in a rewarding industry, we invite you to explore a career with us.

Benefits Include:

  • Competitive Pay
  • Medical, Dental, and Supplemental Insurance
  • 401(k)
  • Paid Holidays
  • Summer Shutdown
  • Christmas Break
  • End-of-Year Bonuses
  • Employee Events and Wellness Programs
  • Opportunities for Professional Growth and Advancement

Turn Designs Into Real-World Products

If you're excited by patternmaking, textiles, product development, and seeing your work on boats and powersports vehicles across the country, we'd love to hear from you.

Recent graduates with degrees in Textile Design, Fashion Design, Product Development, Technical Design, or related fields are encouraged to apply. We are willing to train the right candidate with strong patternmaking and textile knowledge.

Apply today and help create the next generation of industry-leading marine and powersports covers.
