What is a product developer?

A product developer is a mix between an engineer and an industrial designer that develops new products or improves existing ones for small businesses or large corporations. In this career, you work with clients to understand their needs, research market opportunities, and delve into trends to see which products sell the best. With this data, you try to create a competitive design. Your job duties can include creating prototypes, translating sketches into specification sheets, using computer design programs, and collaborating with sales, marketing, technical, or manufacturing departments to launch products. As a product developer, you combine business skills with design and engineering to invent better products than those on the market.

What does a product developer do?

A Product Developer is responsible for creating and improving products from concept to launch. They collaborate with design, engineering, and marketing teams to ensure that the product meets market needs and company goals. Their role includes researching customer preferences, developing prototypes, testing ideas, and overseeing the production process. Product Developers also analyze trends and feedback to refine products and maintain competitiveness. Their work is crucial in transforming ideas into tangible, market-ready products.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a product developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Product Developer, you need a strong background in product design, market research, and project management, often supported by a degree in engineering, design, or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software, prototyping tools, and product lifecycle management (PLM) systems is typically required, along with knowledge of relevant industry standards. Creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving abilities are essential soft skills that help drive innovation and effective teamwork. These skills and qualifications are crucial for developing successful products that meet market needs and maintain a competitive edge.

How does a product developer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during the product lifecycle?

Product Developers work closely with teams such as design, engineering, marketing, and quality assurance throughout the product lifecycle. They facilitate clear communication to ensure that product specifications are met, timelines are maintained, and any challenges are addressed promptly. This collaborative environment allows for iterative feedback, quick problem-solving, and the integration of diverse perspectives, ultimately leading to a more successful product launch. Regular meetings and project management tools are often used to keep all stakeholders aligned.

Job Overview

THETEAM is looking for a Creative Product Technologist, Data & AI to help our Performance & Insights team design, prototype, and ship data-visualization, measurement, data-capture, web-app, and AI-enabled tools for clients across sports and entertainment.

At its core, this is a hands-on product-development and rapid-prototyping role. The candidate's deepest capability is taking an ambiguous brief and turning it into a working, useful product, supported by strong UI/design and data-visualization skills. The candidate will use AI-assisted development to structure data, connect APIs, build web-app experiences, and ship working tools, while producing design-grade interfaces and clear data visualization along the way.

This is not intended to be a traditional client-service role, but the person will work closely with Performance & Insights, paid media, digital account teams, and other internal stakeholders. They will act as the technical and creative engine behind owned-audience, insight-access, and performance-marketing products in the U.S. market.

What You'll Do

  • Design, prototype, and ship fan-facing and internal tools, including data-visualization, data-capture, measurement, dashboard, and web-app products.
  • Translate digital account team briefs, client goals, and internal Performance & Insights needs into technical specs, user flows, data models, interfaces, and working prototypes.
  • Use AI-assisted workflows across OpenAI, Anthropic, and emerging tools for rapid prototyping, vibe-coding, design automation, QA, documentation, and iteration.
  • Build dashboards, interactive reports, and visual frameworks that make performance, social, survey, CRM, first-party, and platform data easier to understand and act on.
  • Create design-grade UI/UX, wireframes, high-fidelity interfaces, landing page sketches, sample ads, audience journeys, and performance marketing mock-ups.
  • Partner with Performance & Insights consultants, social analytics experts, paid media leads, digital account managers, and data/engineering partners to move ideas from ambiguity to useful output.
  • Build with data-privacy sensitivity by default, especially when handling first-party, client, campaign, survey, or PII-adjacent data.
  • Document tools, workflows, assumptions, limitations, and reusable patterns so outputs can scale across the client portfolio.
  • Stay current on AI, creative technology, performance marketing, and digital-product trends, proactively bringing useful new methods into the team toolkit.

What We're Looking For

  • 4-6+ years building and shipping digital products - web apps, interactive tools, dashboards, prototypes, or internal platforms - with a portfolio of live or pilot-ready work that shows clear evidence of your role.
  • AI-native way of working. Practical, fluent use of OpenAI, Claude/Anthropic, and emerging tools to compress build cycles from weeks to days - coding, design automation, research, analysis, QA, documentation, and rapid prototyping.
  • Ability to take a product from idea to working, deployed tool largely on your own. Comfortable with a modern JavaScript/TypeScript framework, connecting data and APIs, and getting something hosted and usable. You do not need to be a specialist full-stack engineer - AI-assisted development is expected to cover the depth a traditional engineer would bring.
  • Comfort working in ambiguity, defining the path forward, and proactively suggesting better ways to solve a problem.
Strong supporting skills
  • Product design and UI/UX, including advanced Figma skills and comfort moving from wireframes to high-fidelity, on-brand interfaces.
  • Data fluency and data visualization - working with structured datasets, APIs, BI/dashboard tools, and SQL literacy; ability to understand data models, join datasets, QA outputs, and partner with data/engineering teams on Snowflake, Tableau, or similar workflows.
  • Advanced Adobe Creative Suite and/or comparable design-production capability.
  • Data-privacy sensitivity by instinct and in practice, including responsible handling of first-party, client, campaign, and PII-adjacent data.
  • Strong written communication and documentation habits so prototypes can become repeatable workflows or scalable products.
Nice to have
  • Sports, entertainment, media, agency, consulting, or performance-marketing background.
  • Experience with Python, R, advanced SQL, D3, Plotly, Observable, Tableau, Power BI, Looker Studio, Snowflake, Qualtrics, Google Analytics, Meta/Google ad platforms, owned-audience growth, CRM, first-party data capture, surveys, quizzes, or gamification mechanics.
What We Offer:
  • Professional Development: Take advantage of our learning and development programs, mentorship opportunities, and career advancement support.
  • Generous Time Off: Enjoy generous paid time off and holiday allowances to recharge and spend time with loved ones.
  • Parental Leave: We provide paid parental leave to support your family during important life events.
  • Retirement Plan:401k planincluding contribution matching.
  • Healthcare:Medical, dental, vision,FSA/HSA,lifeanddisabilitycoverageoptions.
  • Ancillary:Critical illness, identity protection, pet insurance, 529 plans and more
  • Commuter Benefits: Access support for travel and commuting needs, where available

Base salary range: $80k - $120k, plus bonus potential if applicable for role.
Actual base salary is dependent on several factors including but not limited to; market dynamics, location and region, experience, specialized skills/training (education), level of responsibility, budgetary considerations, tenure at the company (for current employees), etc. The salary range listed is just one component of the total compensation package for employees.
