What is the definition of a product?

In the context of a Product Configuration Engineer, a product is a tangible or intangible item designed, developed, and manufactured to meet customer needs. It can include hardware, software, or a combination of both, and requires detailed specifications and configuration options. Understanding the product's features and components is essential for effective customization and deployment.

How does a Product Configuration Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during the product development process?

Product Configuration Engineers work closely with design, manufacturing, and quality assurance teams to ensure product specifications align with customer requirements and company standards. They often facilitate communication between departments by translating technical requirements into clear configuration documentation and managing product data within configuration management systems. Regular meetings and collaborative tools are used to address design changes, resolve issues, and maintain up-to-date product configurations. This role is key in streamlining workflows and ensuring that all teams are synchronized throughout the product lifecycle.

What is the difference between Product Configuration Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectProduct Configuration EngineerMechanical Engineer

Common Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding roles in product development and configuration managementDesign, analyze, and improve mechanical systems

The Product Configuration Engineer focuses on managing product variants, configurations, and ensuring consistency across manufacturing and design. Mechanical Engineers primarily design, analyze, and develop mechanical systems. While both roles require engineering backgrounds, the Product Configuration Engineer emphasizes configuration management within product development teams, whereas Mechanical Engineers concentrate on mechanical design and analysis.

What are the 4 types of products?

In product configuration engineering, products are typically categorized into four types: discrete products, process products, services, and digital products. Discrete products are tangible items like hardware components, while process products involve manufacturing or operational processes. Services include support and consulting, and digital products encompass software and online solutions. Understanding these types helps engineers tailor configurations to meet specific customer needs and industry standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Product Configuration Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Product Configuration Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, experience with product lifecycle management (PLM), and often a degree in mechanical, electrical, or software engineering. Proficiency in configuration management tools such as Siemens Teamcenter, PTC Windchill, or SAP, along with knowledge of BOM (Bill of Materials) structures and ERP systems, is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are critical soft skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and ensuring accurate product specifications. These skills are vital for maintaining product integrity, meeting customer requirements, and supporting efficient production processes.

What is a product in a business?

A product in a business is a good or service offered to customers to meet their needs or solve a problem. Product configuration engineers often work to customize or optimize products using tools like CAD software and technical specifications to ensure they meet customer requirements and quality standards.

What does a Product Configuration Engineer do?

A Product Configuration Engineer is responsible for designing, managing, and maintaining the technical specifications and configurations of products throughout their lifecycle. They work closely with engineering, manufacturing, and sales teams to ensure products meet customer requirements and comply with industry standards. Their duties often include creating and updating bills of materials (BOMs), managing configuration data in PLM systems, and supporting product customization efforts. They play a key role in reducing errors, streamlining production, and ensuring product consistency.

What is the product in math?

In mathematics, the product refers to the result of multiplying two or more numbers or expressions. Product calculation is a fundamental skill for a Product Configuration Engineer, especially when working with quantities, specifications, or configurations that involve multiplication or combinatorial analysis.

Job description

This role sits at the intersection of insurance product design, actuarial logic, and systems configuration. As an Insurance Product Configuration Engineer, you will help turn complex pricing, risk, and product requirements into scalable, production-ready system behavior across Life, Health, and Annuity products.
You'll play a key role in how insurance products are built, configured, validated, and delivered-translating product and actuarial intent into accurate rules, calculations, and automated validation approaches. Working across actuarial, engineering, and business teams, you will help improve product quality, accelerate delivery, and support modernization through automation, product configuration expertise, and AI-enabled ways of working.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Translate actuarial models, product specifications, and business rules into executable system logic within a product configuration environment.
  • Configure and support product behavior across Life, Health, and Annuity domains, including premium calculations, benefit structures, payout logic, and rating rules.
  • Validate complex calculations and product behavior, including interest, mortality, morbidity, present value, future value, and risk-based logic within the software environment.
  • Build and maintain automated validation and testing approaches that compare system outputs to expected results and support reliable, low-regression releases.
  • Use AI tools to improve speed and accuracy in rule interpretation, documentation, analysis, and configuration workflows.
  • Partner with actuaries, architects, engineers, and business stakeholders to deliver consistent, high-quality product behavior across connected systems.

Why This Role?

This is a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of actuarial science, insurance product design, and modern engineering practices. In this role, you will help shape how complex insurance products are configured, validated, and delivered at scale-combining analytical rigor with automation, AI, and system design.

If you enjoy solving complex problems, translating detailed product logic into real-world system behavior, and working across disciplines to improve quality and speed, this role offers the chance to make visible, meaningful impact. It's an opportunity to contribute to modernization while building deep expertise in insurance product delivery and configuration.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or other technical field or equivalent work experience
  • 5+ years applicable experience
  • Demonstrated leadership on mid-large scale projects

Preferred:

  • Insurance and Financial Services Experience: Strong understanding of Life, Health, or Annuity product mechanics, including familiarity with policy administration platforms and processes.
  • Education and Domain Knowledge: Degree or coursework in Engineering, Actuarial Science, Applied Mathematics, Data Science, or a related field.
  • Technical Skills: Experience with SQL, Python, SFTP, APIs, and product configuration or business rules engines.
  • Automation and Delivery Practices: Familiarity with automated testing frameworks, validation approaches, and CI/CD practices that support repeatable, high-quality releases.
  • Communication and Translation: Ability to translate actuarial concepts into system design and configuration, partnering effectively with technical, actuarial, and business stakeholders.
  • AI Fluency: Practical experience using generative AI to accelerate documentation, analysis, rule interpretation, code assistance, and configuration workflows for complex business systems.
  • Analytical and Critical Thinking: Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to evaluate complex product logic, identify risks, and make sound decisions.
  • Collaboration and Learning Agility: Demonstrates curiosity, adaptability, and the ability to work effectively across disciplines while learning new domains, tools, and platforms quickly.
  • Organization and Execution: Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage detail, prioritize effectively, and maintain quality across multiple workstreams.
  • Technology Standards and Governance: Familiarity with technology standards, procedures, and policies that support secure, compliant, and maintainable delivery practices.
